Julian Whippy Posted 5 March , 2003 Share Posted 5 March , 2003 A friend of mine has just bought a lovely Officers metal Travel chest, with Major C.L.Robinson, Lancs Fus. Written on it. We deduce this may well be the same C.L Robinson on Soldiers died and CWGC. He is shown as died at Ypres 8/5/15 with the 1/1 Monmouths as a Lt. Col. At the moment this is supposition, as there has been a change of Regt, has anyone got any journal/Roll diary etc and or photos to add some credence to our story for this great little purchase. ?? Thanks for looking Julian and Ronnie
robwilliams Posted 6 March , 2003 Share Posted 6 March , 2003 Julian, The medal index cards/medal rolls may help, in that they should mention date of death and this should tally with your info (or not). Try the 1914 Star and/or the 1914-15 Star rolls as they give useful info. Consider too, the Army Lists. Then go for the War Diaries. Your man should be mentioned by name quite a few times, given his rank. When he left the Lancs Fus that should be mentioned as too, should his arrival in the Monmouths. Either or both of these should also mention his parent regiment/regiment to which posted. Hopefully that will solve your conundrum. Rob
charlesmessenger Posted 6 March , 2003 Share Posted 6 March , 2003 Julian Actually there are two C L Robinsons. The one in the Monmouths was a South African War veteran who was a Major in the Monmouths with seniority 5 Sep 06 and was also an Honorary Colonel. The owner of the travel chest was in August 1914 was a retired Regular Major and Lt Col and 2nd Honorary Colonel of the 3rd Lancashire Fusiliers (Special Reserve). He also served in South Africa and received the Queen's South Africa Medal with three clasps. He certainly served in WW1, but not overseas, and retired at the end of the war . Julian Whippy Posted 6 March , 2003 Author Share Posted 6 March , 2003 Thanks for all the pointers, we'll certainly look at the Medal index next time we can. Charles, is your info from a medal roll or Battalion history etc ? It's looking more like he was a survivor though isn't it. Thanks both. charlesmessenger Posted 7 March , 2003 Share Posted 7 March , 2003 Julian and Ronnie My sources are Hart's Army List for 1915 and Quarterly Army List for the Quarter ending 31 December 1919: War Services of Oifficers in the Army. Charles
