Burtonian Posted 26 May , 2004 Share Posted 26 May , 2004 Dear all, I have in my possession one letter and two postcards which were sent by my grandfather from France during 1914-15. I wonder if anyone out there can offer any assistance in identifying by means of the post-marks exactly where they originated from? Details as below : 1. Marked 'ARMY BASE POST OFFICE ------' (no number visible), circular stamp, black ink. Inside circle: 'B 29 SP 14'. Censor's stamp circular, crown in centre, red ink, wording: 'PASSED BY CENSOR No 164'. 2. Marked 'FIELD POST OFFICE T. 6.', circular stamp, black ink. Inside circle: 'B 1 MR 15'. Censor's stamp square, crown in centre, violet ink, wording: 'PASSED BY CENSOR ------' (?) First digit could be '1', last digit is '4', widely separated, nothing visible in between. 3. Marked 'FIELD POST OFFICE 80', circular stamp, black ink. Inside circle: 'A 4 JU 15'. Censor's stamp triangular, crown in centre, violet ink, wording: 'PASSED BY CENSOR No 177' All the best, Nick Miller.
stevem Posted 26 May , 2004 Share Posted 26 May , 2004 Hi Nick I dont think you can pinpoint the exact location of your grandfathers unit using the postmarks. Field Post Office 80 was located in France between January and November 1915 and was allocated to 80th Brigade. The triangular censor mark 177 was allocated to XII Brigade, Royal Field Artillery. Field Post Office T6 was located in France between January 1915 and March 1918 and was allocated to the 6th Division Train. Was your grandfather in the RFA? I hope this helps a little. Burtonian Posted 27 May , 2004 Author Share Posted 27 May , 2004 Thanks Steve. The stuff about XII Bde RFA is potentially very useful. Yes, my grandfather was in the RFA. All the best, Nick Miller.
