Hi,

my name is Vincenzo and writing from Italy.

I'm looking information for merchant ship sank off Syracuse On May 14, 1918 .

the name of the Ship is Woolston “Official No 112723 Built 1900”

I will very happy if I had a crew list, plan and photographs of it.

The ship sank off during the WWI

Can you help me?

Thanks.

P.S. sorry for my English!

Vincenzo

Welcome to the Forum !

Woolston was torpedoed without warning by German submarine UC52 whilst on a voyage with a cargo of sulphur from Syracuse to Messina on 14 May 1918. The ship sank with all crew of 18,including the Master,2 kms off Syracuse Harbour. It's position at sea is shown as 37.30N/12.20E in Naval records.

Maybe some of the crew are buried nearby. Why are you seeking this information,is there a name you want or to know about ? Perhaps you are a diver on the wreck ?

Hi - Welcome to the forum

While most sources indicate 19 casualties I can add only three more to Ron’s list and query one (who may have been a crew member but died earlier), to make a total of 14 casualties overall:

The three additions are;

CHING AN Fireman and Trimmer MM SS Woolston (London) drowned 14.5.18 Hong Kong Memorial

WONG MAN Fireman, MM SS Woolston (London) drowned 14.5.18 Hong Kong Memorial

YIM SANG Fireman and Trimmer MM SS Woolston (London) drowned 14.5.18 Hong Kong Memorial

Query:

HASAN ALI Fireman and Trimmer Mercantile Marine H.M.H.S. "Salta" Date of Death: 10/04/1917 "Salta" Memorial. STE. MARIE CEMETERY, LE HAVRE

Cheers, Terry
