corisande Posted 5 May , 2010 Share Posted 5 May , 2010 OK, I know when I am beaten I am trying to construct a "crib sheet" so that I can see the likely date of a man's enlistment from his service number - and I do appreciate that it is an inexact science. I am trying to put an enlistment date against Irish Brigade men, so that I can see where they are likely to be in the censuses. I have managed with most of the regiments, but I am struggling with the Connaught Rangers and have only managed a small list of dates and service numbers, and even that looks illogical. I suspect I am mixing chalk with cheese here. 4872 joined in Aug 1894 6937 joined in Oct 1900 7644 joined in Dec 1902 8243 joined in August 1904 8778 joined in Nov 1905 10123 joined in Feb 1911 10664 joined in Mar 1913 Has anyone, I suspect Mark has, a list of enlistment date against service number
mhifle Posted 5 May , 2010 Share Posted 5 May , 2010 Hi, This is what I have for the 1st & 2nd (Regular Battalions), the other Battalions each have their own sequence of regimental numbers. I am not quite sure what is going on with the numbers in 1918+. corisande Posted 5 May , 2010 Author Share Posted 5 May , 2010 Mark Thanks I had the right sort of progression, what threw me was that recruiting for the Connaught Rangers seems to have dropped from about 350 men a year to 250 men a year around 1903. But your very detailed figures confirm this. I am not about to write a mathematical thesis on the comparative recruitment into Irish regiments, but a check against the Dublins and the Munsters, does not seem to have this dip in recruitment. I guess one of those odd points of interest that come up from time to time
mhifle Posted 6 May , 2010 Share Posted 6 May , 2010 Hi, This drop in recruiting may have been a result of the the end of the Boer War? Regards Mark
Patrick ODwyer Posted 6 May , 2010 Share Posted 6 May , 2010 Not sure this is quite in sequence but my grandfather was 8691 enlisted 8 December 1905
mhifle Posted 6 May , 2010 Share Posted 6 May , 2010 Hi, Thanks for that. I think it gets out of sequence sometimes when someone is transferred from another regiment when serving oversea's. Regards Mark

Hedley Malloch Posted 6 May , 2010 Share Posted 6 May , 2010 7010 was Private Matthew Wilson of the 2nd CR. At 36 he was the oldest of the eleven British soldiers executed by the Germans at Guise Chateau on 25 February 1915. Do you have any further details about him other than the date of his enlistement? Many thanks
archangel9 Posted 6 May , 2010 Share Posted 6 May , 2010 7010 Mathew Wilson was reported missing in the Times edition of 9th October 1914, along with a large number of others who were taken prisoner at Le Grand Fayt. His MIC says deceased 26/8/1914, which of course he wasn't. There are 25 pages of service records on Ancestry. He was from Fohena, Ahescgragh in Galway. I haven't checked the records yet so I don't know what further information is there. John
corisande Posted 6 May , 2010 Author Share Posted 6 May , 2010 Its how you spell "Matthew" or "Mathew" as to whether you find this sort of record. Its always worth using the wild card operator, or phonetic matches on Ancestry searches like that. Particularly where Irish accents are involved. Patrick ODwyer Posted 6 May , 2010 Share Posted 6 May , 2010 Mark In my grandad's case he enlisted directly into the CR at Clonmel on 8 December 1905. That is why I was a bit cautious about his numbrer in the light of that list. He later tansferred in India.
