Adam Llewellyn Posted 23 April , 2010 Share Posted 23 April , 2010 Good Day All, I've just been given a British War Medal which only as the name Victor Emanuel on the rim. I've got a couple of names on Ancestry MIC's, but both are other ranks, so would this man be an office or something else? Best Regards. Liam Posted 23 April , 2010 Share Posted 23 April , 2010 Hi Llewm If there is just a name and no rank or regiment then it may well be Merchant Navy Liam

Andrew Upton Posted 23 April , 2010 Share Posted 23 April , 2010 Or perhaps this chap? Name: EMANUEL, VICTOR Initials: V Nationality: United Kingdom Rank: Private Regiment/Service: South Wales Borderers Unit Text: 2nd Bn. Emanuel S.W.B" (or similar), and not with his full name and nothing else. Merchant Navy is one of the more likely contenders.

HarryBettsMCDCM Posted 23 April , 2010 Share Posted 23 April , 2010 ...Or even a civilian war worker. IIRC they usually are Initial{s} & Surname; Mercantile Marine {ie: Merchant Navy} are the only ones normally to have Full Name with no ther detail HB
River97 Posted 23 April , 2010 Share Posted 23 April , 2010 Mercantile Marine {ie: Merchant Navy} are the only ones normally to have Full Name with no ther detail HB I'm with you on this one. I see it as the only possibility. Can't be a service member as no rank. Cheers Andy.
DavoT Posted 24 April , 2010 Share Posted 24 April , 2010 I'll go along with the Merchant Navy too. Cheers, David
27thBN Posted 24 April , 2010 Share Posted 24 April , 2010 Yes the Merchant Navy ..usually the font on the naming is bigger on merchant medals than army as a start. MC
per ardua per mare per terram Posted 24 April , 2010 Share Posted 24 April , 2010 The Mercantile Marine {ie: Merchant Navy} MICs are not online, they are on microfiche in BT 351 at Kew. In the same area are the post war registration cards. Here's a handy research guide or 2: Merchant Seamen: Medals and Honours http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalog...?sLeafletID=133 Merchant Seamen: Sea Service Records 1913-1972 http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalog...?sLeafletID=
per ardua per mare per terram Posted 24 April , 2010 Share Posted 24 April , 2010 Or perhaps this chap? No, the clue is in his rank, unit etc. Just picking a name because it's the same rarely gives a full match.
Adam Llewellyn Posted 24 April , 2010 Author Share Posted 24 April , 2010 Thanks to everyone for the input, its appreciated. MC, The font is definitely bigger when I compare it against another BWM. Regards. Llew.
SiegeGunner Posted 24 April , 2010 Share Posted 24 April , 2010 One more 'm' and it might have been Victor Emmanuel III, King of Italy ...
Adam Llewellyn Posted 25 April , 2010 Author Share Posted 25 April , 2010 Now there's a thought, wishful thinking mind .
per ardua per mare per terram Posted 25 April , 2010 Share Posted 25 April , 2010 The extra M could always have been missed off! More prosaic, your BWM is probably half a pair with a missing Mercantile Marine Medal out there somewhere.
Adam Llewellyn Posted 25 April , 2010 Author Share Posted 25 April , 2010 You're just trying to make me feel better. lol The BWM did come with a Peace/Victory medal, but the Mercantile Marine Medal would be great. Llew.
