Guest Ian Bowbrick Posted 24 May , 2004 Share Posted 24 May , 2004 Richard, Ben died in the late 1960s from lung disease - the effects of a 60 a day habit plus being gassed probably didn't help. Unfortunately the entire family has now died out leaving only me to carry the torch as it were. Militarily Ben was just another soldier, however to his distinction, Ivor has told me that Ben was one of the very first medical category C2 men to be sent overseas to France. Strange thing he looks such a healthy chappie, however he was brought up in Carlisle in very poor conditions. He was one of many men to come down South during the Depression of the 1930s, bringing with him his younger sister who in turn got married had a family etc etc. Ben was very proud of his wartime service and I am very lucky to have this photograph, his medals, cap badge and shoulder titles.
