Ecole d’Equitation Ypres

Can someone help me pinpoint the location of the Ecole d’Equitation, Ypres.

The 4th Northumbrian (Howitzer) Brigade history has them deploying to "a position near the Ecole d’Equitation on the bank of a moat around Ypres."

Looking at a contemporary map I can see a large school just east of Ypres, south of the Menin Road and North of the Ypres - Roulers railway. Is that it?

Any help much appreciated.

before ww1 ieper was a garrison town

the only school at the meenseweg is st jozef school.( now)

Ian,

I presume that the school to the east was the Ecole de Bienfaisance d''Etat (which I gather interprets pretty much as the State Charity School. I don't think this is a riding school; might that be attached to the Barracks (but I think they were Infantry Barracks) which I think was to the south west of the city towards the railway station, near the magazine.

I presume this is the school you refer to Ian, it's the only one I can see near the moat at Ypres

Map from "Linesman".

The Ecole that Sabine refers to was called Ecole De Bien Faissance. It was used by 12th HLI in July 1917 as an HQ. Other regiments had also used it. It was eventually reduced to rubble by the Germans.

I'm slightly doubtful that this is the Ecole you want as it was a grand building versus.....

The school was not rebuilt after the war.

It was where now are the houses between :

Wateringstraat

Zaalhof

Ieperleestraat

Tegelstraat

Approx. 250 meters northwest of the Rijselpoort (Lille Gate)

Aurel

Added later.

I was typing my posting while Unitedsound was adding his.

He's right : the picture shows the Riding school.

Aurel, this reminds me that I meant to email you one month ago.

Today is 13th April. On 13th March, after Last Post, I spent 45 minutes walking these very streets before returning to my B&B in Arsenaalstraat. Of course, the one I really wanted to walk along was Ieperleestraat.

Sorry Sabine I should be old enough now to know not to make assumptions

I saw your 12HLI thread some time ago. Great stuff.

I've put together an 80 page story about my Great Uncle's time in Flanders and will be passing a copy to Annemie at Lijjsenthoek in July, when I next visit.

My GU was killed within a few metres of Aeroplane Cemetery.

Thanks to everyone on the site for their invaluable help, including the aforementioned Aurel.
