That's not a bad question there Tom.

There are three Michael Ward's Listed as KIA during the war:

Rank: Private

Regiment/Service: Connaught Rangers

Unit Text: 2nd Bn.

Age: 32

Date of Death: 11/11/1914

Service No: 4067

Additional information: Son of John Ward, of Castlebar St., Westport, Co. Mayo.

Rank: Corporal

Regiment/Service: Connaught Rangers

Unit Text: 6th Bn.

Date of Death: 03/09/1916

Service No: 4544

Rank: Private

Regiment/Service: Connaught Rangers

Unit Text: 5th Bn.

Date of Death: 07/12/1915

Service No: 10773

So, the questions are:

Do you know the family lineage?

Do you know the service numbers of Michael and James?

Do you know which Battalions they served in?

Do you know the date of death?

Cheers Andy.

You will need to provide a bit more information to be able to identify them. There is no specific Michael Ward as being kia serving with the Connaught Rangers but there are 4 x M. Ward's who could be your ggf. Strangely of the 330 J. Ward's who seem to have been casualties only one was in the Connaught Rangers. Not much information on the CWGC website but he was 4180 Pte. James Ward, 1st Battalion, Connaught Rangers who died 11th March 1916 and whose grave whereabouts is unknown so he is commemorated on the Basra Memorial. His papers may be available.

later - looks like Andy has beaten me to it and has more information than I have access to.

This James was "missing" 11.3.16:-

Name: James Ward

Regiment or Corps: 3rd Connaught Rangers

Regimental Number: 4180

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documen...Edoc_Id=5949319

I can only see another three men of that name - none of whom qualify.

From CWGC:-

Name: WARD, JAMES

Initials: J

Nationality: United Kingdom

Rank: Private

Regiment/Service: Connaught Rangers

Unit Text: 1st Bn.

Date of Death: 11/03/1916

Service No: 4180

Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead

Grave/Memorial Reference: Panel 40 and 64.

Memorial: BASRA MEMORIAL

Tom - do I take it you've identified James as being from Tuam? In which case, SDGW has 10773 Michael Ward from Tuam, Co. Galway, while 4544 was also from Galway.

thaks for the help so far

dont know if this is any help micheal ward was married to margaret and he had six children one of them being james who had to two children of his own when he went to war

is their next of kin papers or would their ages be recorded at the time of enlistment

Ages are recorded on enlistment, William - and, I think, some basic NoK details (though I think there's a separate from completed by the family in the event of death). Once you've identified them, the question is going to be whether their service papers survived WW2. I understand about 70% were destroyed in bombings. Officers' records tend to be more complete.

Hi,

10773 Private Michael Ward enlisted as Regular in the Connaught Rangers 27 Oct 1913 aged 21 and previously been in the 3rd Connaught Rangers with no.3725 having enlisted 30 March 1910 aged 17. This would make him 23 in 1915 when he was killed so he would be too young to be James Ward's father.

4180 Private James Ward would have enlisted into the 3rd Battalion Connaught Rangers 1st April 1913, and left the 3rd Battalion 7 Oct 1914 with a draft conducted by 2nd Lieutenant A Montgomery with 114 Other Ranks to join the 2nd Battalion in France.

Regards Mark
