Hi Peter

And I would be overjoyed to have the M.Ms in the 4th, 5th, 6th & 7th Battalions NF.

But - only if they are conveniently listed by battalions and if you have time.

If they aren't and you haven't, then any you could find for the 6th Batt.

Thank you very much for your offer.

I have some details of MM recommendations to 1st Bn. men for events of April 1918. I don't know if any of the awards were confirmed though. The men are:

65337 Pte E. Lawton

65355 Pte J. Smith

65140 Sgt W. Ford

235473 Pte E.E. Eastick

56110 Pte H. Holdsworth

65256 Sgt J. Booth

14770 Pte G.F. Wood

32691 Pte R. Battista

If anyone can confirm if all/any of these awards were confirmed I would be grateful.

Regards,

Ken

Unfortunately the list only gives the following info

Army no Name , Initial, Rank and date of gazette.

There are about twenty nine pages with up to 54 names on a page. If you want a copy email me but would like cost of photocopy/postage etc covered.

Thanks

Peter

Peter

As I can see from Paul's list (which is wonderful) I have been asking far too much.

I will be able to get the info from the London Gazette. It's just that with the LG I don't find it particularly easy to extract the MMs. It's more a case of just ploughing through any reference to 6th Northumberland Fusiliers.

Even with the officers who have citations I often got 'not found' but then I found them with the name I had originally entered, in wading through.

I have the soldiers with MM, who are in CWGC and SDIGW.

Sorry Peter, I need to engage brain.

Would you have time to look for a 6th Battalion Northumberland Fusilier who may have a M.M.?

Pte. Elsdon Corkin 4157 or 265906.

Peter

Thank you so much.

When I originally listed his name, I had Corkin Elsdon M.M. Private etc. As he has rather an exotic name anyway, I didn't want to award him a military medal on the basis of him being called Elsdon Matthew Michael Corkin.

Thank you for confirming Private Corkin's gallantry.

Lists of all known M.M. winners in the Northumberland Fusiliers were one time compiled and published by Ed Forrest, a former RNF/RRF man. Whether copies still exist I don't know, as Ed died last year, but believe copies of his VC, MC, DCM & MM files were sent to the Fusiliers Museum in Alnwick.

Pte. Elsdon Corkin 4157 or 265906.

Kate Carr

Hello Kate,

My list of Northumberland Fusilier other ranks gallantry awards for the Great War show 265906 Private Corkin notification of the award of the french Medaille Millitaire In the London Gazette Supplement for the 14th of July 1917. I have been unable to locate the award of an MM in the London Gazette though I have seen two gallantry lists, one that shows MM award for 18th June 1917 and another that shows MM for 14th September 1917 ? His card medal index shows MM but this could well relate to the award of the Medaille Millitaire. He was also entitled to the british War and Victory medals, despite his earlier numbering of 4157 he was not entitled to a star. As I am sure you are aware Pte. Corkin who was born in Jarrow was reported missing presumed dead on the 27th May 1918.

Regards.

Not surprising he didn't get the 14/15 Star, he didn't enlist until June 1915, as 6/4157 Pte Elsden Corkin(renumbered 265509 in 1917) and doesn't appear to have got to France until possibly January 1916. The 1/6th War Diary does record he was in France 1916, having been "Sick to Hospital" on two occassions - 20/7/1916 & 19/12/1916. When he went 'missing' he was serving with 'A' Coy, 1/6th Bn at the time.

evening all,

Sorry I missed this post.

Cpl J Scott MM 7th NF came from Pegswood, however he is commemorated on the memorial in Bothal Northumberland.

I provided some notes for inclusion on the North East War Memorials Project site. Ref B48.1

Hope this fills a small gap.

Regards Alan Wallace

PS I have seen his MM! It's owned by a chap in Newbiggin By Sea and I am sure he would love any further info.

Hi Cpl John Scott was my Great Uncle. In the Morpeth Herald in 1920 there is an article about my great grandparents receiving a Photograph with a transcription in Memorium of John from Pegswood Town Council. I have not seen his Military Medal but would be very interested to see it

Hi,

AIW hasn’t signed in to the forum since April 2017. I’ve sent him a message to alert him to your post.
