I've been goingthrough the list of names on the recently re-dedicated memorial at Dulwich Community Hospital (was Southwark Military Hospital)

http://www.flickr.com/photos/44397078@N05/...57623548609907/

and one of the ones I've had trouble finding on CWGC is Pte W Hextall.

The best I can find on CWGC is listed as 10656 PteThomas William Hextall of the Leicestershire Regiment - http://www.cwgc.org/search/casualty_detail...asualty=2750918

The GRO has a William T Hextall dying in the Sept quarter of 1916 in Camberwell and there is a surviving service record for 10656 William Hextall of the Leicestershire Regiment.

Is this sufficient to put forward for correction or do I need more documentation?

You would have to show that that Thomas William were not his forenames. They very likely were and the war memorial is in error. It is quite common for men to have dropped a forename.

The information on CWGC was supplied by the military and CWGC is unlikely to change it as it will be assumed that was his name as given to the army.

I'd much rather rely on CWGC than a memorial for accurate names but his service record shows his name as only William.

Playing Devil's Advocat.... That still does not prove he was not Thomas William only that he used William when joining up.

He may have been William to his friends and upon joining the army but he could have later changed it to the full set later - or his NoK could have corrected it when they returned their Final Verification Form (assuming they did).

His death and birth certificates would help and add more evidence.

Thanks Terry.

Certs have been ordered and they show William T for his BC and William Thomas on the DC. He is plain old William in 1891, 1901 ans 1911 cenuses.

So the Memorial won't need any change. I bet that's a relief all round!

Has there been a boundary change as he's buried in Warwickshire and Dadlington comes up the same, so presume home burial after dying at Dulwich.

It appears as Leicestershire on the Attestation Form, so just curious...

Interesting about his burial. He was born in Market Bosworth and was still there living with his parents in 1911. His father is recorded as also dying there in 1918 (wife survived him) so it is not like the head dies and the widow moves in with family.

SPOF: Can't answer that one! Dadlington is NE of Nuneaton, Astley where he is buried in St Andrews cChurch, is W of Nuneaton. Perhaps he went to recuperate at a relatives as his Dad may have been dying? I just assumed that Astley was where the family had moved to.
