Cause of Discharge

Recommended Posts

Guest Pip

Hi everyone

I have a copy of a medal index card which I'm almost certain is my Great Grandfather Philip Byrne with the following information:

Reg No: T4/235961

A.S.C Driver

Date of Discharge: 9.10.17 (age 37)

Enlistment: 2.10.16

Cause of Discharge: S.

A.Order 265/17

Para:2.B.i

(Medals: British War, Victory and S W B)

Does anyone know what the" A.Order 265/17 Para:2.B.i" part of the cause of discharge refers to?

This is all the information available as there are no surviving service records, unfortunately, so any help would be greatly appreciated

Thanks very much

Pip

That'll be Army Order 265 of 1917, but I don't know what it actually said.

Pip,

I believe the "S" refers to sickness i.e. as the cause of discharge. The fact he got a Silver war Badge indicates this too - you only got one for honourable discharge due to sickness or wounds. My Great Grandfather also got SWB due to "discharge due to sickness". In the SWB roll is should state cause of discharge i.e. sickness or wounds.

Good luck.

Kevin.

Hi

Not strictly true, you could get a silver war badge for other reasons. I have one to an MGC Cavalryman, reason given for discharge " Granted Pension".

Pip,

if you can get to the PRO, Army Orders for 1917 are under WO 123/59.
