IJDALLINGER Posted 25 March , 2010 Share Posted 25 March , 2010 Having recently come into possesion of some photographs of Zeppelin Raid damage in Spital Road, Maldon in 1915. I wonder if anyone has any further info on this incident. From what I can see, it believe the L6 was involved but will take advice on this if anyone knows different. Were there any casualties etc? Thanks

Thanks Hi Ivor. It was L6 (Captain Oberleutnant Freiherr von Buttlar). Only fatality was a speckled hen belonging to Henry Hutson of Gate Street!). I have researched the raid and included it as a chapter in my book on Maldon and the Great War. Best regards. SPN Maldon.
Aspern Posted 25 March , 2010 Share Posted 25 March , 2010 Von Buttlar, the commander of Navy Zeppelin L.6, gives an amusing account of the raid and how he had absolutely no idea where they were and what town they had bombed, in his book 'Zeppelins Over England'. It was his first raid over England and it took place on the night of 15/16 April 1915. Aspern

Von Buttlar got promoted to Kapitanleutnant and nearly came to grief in October 1917 when his airship was pursued and damaged by Flt/Lt C.S. Nunn, RFC. I have some interesting accounts of the Maldon incident and the local papers were also full of it at the time. Regards. SPN Maldon
KateJ Posted 8 April , 2012 Share Posted 8 April , 2012 Firstly apologies for dropping into an old thread! I was recently looking through the British Pathe's online archive. This hasn't been marked up by the archive as being Maldon, but it most definitely is Maldon! http://www.britishpa...lin-over-essex/ Kate
Aspern Posted 21 January , 2016 Share Posted 21 January , 2016 Hi Maldon - hope you are still out there! In the Zepp raid on Maldon reports mention the only human casualty as a young girl who received a minor flesh would. Do you have a name for her and which of the two HE bombs on Maldon were responsible for it - or was it caused by one of the two Heybridge bombs. Any help much appreciated.
