Thats great Myrtle, looks more and more like Pte. W.E. Thomas is on the wrong memorial. Also Henry Lea did not make it home, he was killed on 19th April 1917.

Annette

It does doesn't it. Thanks for posting the detail regarding Henry Lea.

Cant find MIC for Williams!

Note, Thomas had only been in France since the 5 May 1915...killed after 20 days action.

Also note Thompson was downgraded to a Corporal from a Sergent for misconduct.

Hope all this helps!

Cheers,

Luke

These are CWGC Casualties from 25th May to 31st May 1915. Check them against your Lists of Missing and it might provide further clues...

Blimey Kevin, I thought Annette had said that there was only 6 people killed on the 25 May 1915 (according to the war diary).

She must have been refferring to 1st Batt men who were with the 2nd Batt at the time of death on the 25 May 1915??

I knew about

THOMPSON AM 5046 1ST BN 26/05/1915 KING'S SHROPSHIRE LIGHT INFANTRY - he was KIA on the 26th

I have counted 9 1st batt men on your list, the two new ones i didn't have are

HULSE JW 7599 1ST BN 26/05/1915 KING'S SHROPSHIRE LIGHT INFANTRY - he was killed 31st so that is why we didnt have him

MATHER A 7400 1ST BN 31/05/1915 KING'S SHROPSHIRE LIGHT INFANTRY - he was killed 26th so he wasn't counted.

Ao Annette was right, 6 1st batt men Killed on 25 May 1915.

Will have to look into these two a bit more to see if these too were with the 2nd batt when killed. Might give an insight into what was going on.

Had no idea that there were so many killed from the 2nb batt KSLI on this day so thanks for all that hard graft kevin. Annette wasn't able to check her 2nd batt diary as it hadn't photographed clearly.

Cheers

Thanks Neil, interesting that Lt. Steward was with the 3rd KSLI but was attatched to the 2nd Batt KSLI. The 2nd Batt must have been short of numbers and other batt men incl. Frank's 1st Batt must have been attatched also. We know that the 1s batt was involved at Armentieres Area on the 25th May 1915 but only had 1 casualty on this date according to Annettes 1st batt war diary so seems like it was quiet at the time. We know the 2nd Batt was at Railway Wood were there was some taking over trenches which then had to be surrendered at quite a cost looking at Kevins list there on his post.

Cheers Neil,

Keep up the good work!

If you have the date of the newspaper in which Lt Steward's obit appeared you will be able to work out the approximate date that he took the draft of men to the 2nd battalion. This draft may have included Pte Nagington.

Hi Luke

Blimey Kevin, I thought Annette had said that there was only 6 people killed on the 25 May 1915 (according to the war diary).

Look at post 37 were I state 73 men were killed in the Battle (for Railway Wood) there are three men who I beleive are also listed under incorrect dates as follows

16108 Pte. Till, John, Born Cannock, Staffs. (Durrington) Enlisted Stafford, landed in F/F 19/05/15 joined 2/K.S.L.I. listed as K. in A. 21/05/15 Aged 21. Son of James and Sarah Till, of 46, Tenterbanks, Stafford. His name is on the Menin Gate Memorial. The 2nd Batt. were in billets in Busseboom in 21st, so I am sure this is incorrect date and he is likely to have been killed of 25th-26th.

8985 Pte. Coney, William Henry, Born St. Augustine, Penarth Enlisted Cardiff, Glam. Landed in F/F 21/12/14 with 2/K.S.L.I. listed as K. in A. 23/05/15 Aged 26. Son of Mr. and Mrs T. H. Coney, of 12, Maughan St, Penarth, Cardiff. His name is on the Menin Gate Memorial. The 2nd Batt. were still in billets in Busseboom in 23rd so I am sure this is incorrect date and he is likely to have been killed of 25th-26th.

9068 A/Sgt. Evans, James Henry, Born Rodington, Shrops. Enlisted Shrewsbury, landed in F/F 21/12/14 with 2/K.S.L.I. listed as K. in A. 28/05/15 His name is on the Menin Gate Memorial. The 2nd Batt. had retured to billets in Busseboom by the 27th, so I am sure this is incorrect date and he is likely to have been killed of 25th-26th.

I do not mention the number of officers killed in my post (37)which was two killed & six wounded

Also Luke it does not make any differance how many papers record that they were killed with the 2nd Battalion, it could be recorded in a hundred papers or just one, they all got their info. from the Army Records/Minersty of defence.

To answer this Q-the 2nd Batt. had been in action since the gas attack it saw heavy fighting on 25th & 26th April north of Broodseinde. Next they were in action on the Bellewaarde Ridge, opposite Westhoek on the 4th & 5th May. On the 8th May they were in heavy fighting between top of ridge and lake and by nightfall held line from Bellewaarde Farm to the railway, more heavy fighting followed on the 9th & 10th.

The Battalion’s loses were replaced by three drafts of 97 other ranks + Lt.’s J.S.H. Beamish and J.C.F. Lister on 13th May and 130 other ranks on 16th May & 130 other ranks & Lt.’s H.A. Robinson and R.B.L. Persse on 21st May. Captain D. Leslie joined on 23rd May.

The following two in Kevin's list were not killed with the 2nd Batt. as both are buried in Uk

7104 Pte. Morgan, John, D. of W. 25/05/15 Buried in St. Micheals churchyard Walford-on-Wye

9300 Pte. Thomas, Harold George, Died 26/05/15 Buried in Pembroke Dock Military

Cemetery.

Not sure if the following two either would have been wounded on 25th/26th due to time scale ?

7599 Pte. Hulse, John William, Died 26/05/15 Buried in Wimereux Communal Cemetery

7682 Pte. Simpson, Thomas Bishop, D. of W. 26/05/15 Buried in Boulogne Eastern Cemetery

Cheers Annette,

It can be very confusing for a military novice like myself to follow all the info on the post.

Especially when there are so many mistakes and mis informstion from what you would have thought are reliable sources. It really does make it a difficult task doesn't it? You cant really take anything for granted it seems. The dates especially are definately very inaccurate it seems.

Thanks for taking the time in pointing this out,

Luke

Hi Luke

Especially when there are so many mistakes and mis informstion from what you would have thought are reliable sources. It really does make it a difficult task doesn't it?

Too right, when I first started researching some 22 years ago I used to get very pissed off when sources did not match or I know dates were incorrect but after a time I got use to the fact that documents have mistakes in them, and it's no wonder, if a battalion as been in a big fight over days, with many officers dead, wounded or just plain worn out then mistakes in forms can take place. Also mistakes at records offices can be made because of the very large work loads they had to deal with, one chaps papers had three different attestment dates which I have put down to typing errors.

There are times when you never really know the true facts and I have to reley on my 22 years experance to give me as close a picture as possible as to what happoned, as is the case of Frank, I do not think we'll ever know for sure if he died with the 2nd Batt. but from gut feeling based on all the little bits and bobs we can say its very likely that he was killed with the 2nd Batt.

Annette

PS if you ever do find a source that proves the above I would be greatful to know
