Found this partial 'sick list' towards the end of the service record of Harry Barlow 49431 10th Bn. Cheshire Regiment KIA 17/02/17

No connection that I can see - Harry's attestation wasn't approved until 1916 and he wasn't in France until later that year!

Obviously slipped in by mistake, but might be of interest to anyone researching any of the men named

An interesting list, probably gathered up into the service record after the clear up after the bombing.

Very interesting Caryl and shows what can still turn up!! Wonder what impulsive insanity was?

From what I can gather via various online journals, seems to be an old psychiatric term for the impulse to commit acts of violence i.e. murder and suicide

Found this in American Cyclopedia 'Thomas Arnold in 1802 made a general division into ideal and notional insanity. The ideal he subdivided into: 1, phrenetic, or raving; 2, incoherent; 3, maniacal; 4, sensitive. Notional insanity he divided into: 5, delusive; 6, whimsical; 7, fanciful; 8, impulsive; 9, scheming; 10, vain or self-important; 11, hypochondriacal; 12, pathetic; 13, appetitive. ..... etc.

Haven't figured out what V.D.H. is though. Know what V.D. is but what is the H ? Whatever it was it was chronic

This is the second time in a few days I've found something odd with a medical theme in service records. Going through a 59 page record the other night (sooo long I actually fell asleep on top of my lap top reading it!) Most of the pages relevant for my man who was KIA 1917 and a lot of the usual duplicates but two were for another person who had died of dysentery in 1912 and one page was a fairly gory Post Mortem report! Must go back and try to find the correct home for that if possible

Thanks Caryl. Don't know what VDH is either. I keep hoping some of my grandfather's records (ASC) may turn up in the manner you describe.

Hi Diane

Granddad's name was Arthur William Hanstock and he was a driver in the ASC-M2/183692. Have also identified an Albert William Dovey in the same Unit-M2/183958.

For the record, there is a topic called Casualty Lists where it might be helpful to include the original post with the list.

Thanks

Mark

Mark

Diane has included the list above in her database. Just reading through the thread you posted and notice someone else found a casualty list in a service record!

Diane wrote "VDH = valvular disease of the heart"

Of course it is! Thanks Diane
