roel22 Posted 5 March , 2010 Share Posted 5 March , 2010 Found this photo on ebay, showing French dugouts on Kemmel Hill, april 23rd 1918. Are these positions still visible nowadays? Roel
Joris Ryckeboer Posted 5 March , 2010 Share Posted 5 March , 2010 The only excavated-visible dugouts at the "Kemmelberg" are those at the "Lettenberg".
roel22 Posted 5 March , 2010 Author Share Posted 5 March , 2010 Been at the Lettenberg. Any idea where about the dugouts in the pic must have been? Roel
Joris Ryckeboer Posted 5 March , 2010 Share Posted 5 March , 2010 As I remember, this picture/site has to be situated between de Kemmel- and the Monteberg.
roel22 Posted 5 March , 2010 Author Share Posted 5 March , 2010 Aha! So not somewhere on the top of the Kemmelberg, as I expected?
Joris Ryckeboer Posted 5 March , 2010 Share Posted 5 March , 2010 Indeed. I think that the spot is marked on a trench map as "Mill". Not sure... The place was known as "de kleine kemmelberg". Can't check it now.
roel22 Posted 5 March , 2010 Author Share Posted 5 March , 2010 Perhaps you can mark it on this aerial?

frie Posted 8 March , 2010 Share Posted 8 March , 2010 hello Roel, Windmill on the Letteberg pulled down in 1905 !!! The mill was close to "Kattekerkhof". also called "Terrieremolen"
Aurel Sercu Posted 8 March , 2010 Share Posted 8 March , 2010 Frie (J.), Has there ever been a "Vindmill" southwest of the top of Kemmel Hill (see Dave 'Croonaert''s map in his posting) ? (Leteberg is north of the top. Correct ?) As far as I know the area (not well enough I'm afraid) ... isn't this a bit too low, on the slope ? frie Posted 8 March , 2010 Share Posted 8 March , 2010 Aurel, Map --- +- 1840. Position Kemmel mill and Letteberg mill (Belvedere may be Loker) Frie
Joris Ryckeboer Posted 8 March , 2010 Share Posted 8 March , 2010 In Kemmel 1918, Koen Baert wrote (pag31) under the same picture as shown here; Citation: In de overgang van Kemmel- naar Monteberg, in die tijd Kleine Kemmelberg of Louismolenberg genoemd, hadden de Britten een grote schuilplaats aangelegd. I wonder if you can do something with that, Frie? I'm sure, Belvedere is on top of the Kemmel. On your map, situated under. On your map above; Lettenberg? Isn't there a thirt mill on the left side of Kemmel Mill on your 1840 -map, Frie? Direction Dranouter.
frie Posted 8 March , 2010 Share Posted 8 March , 2010 The thirt mill in Kemmel is at Vierstraet) (Belvedere is Dranoutre...) But on Locre a thirt mill -- called de 'Monteberg molen" or Schraegemolen +- south-west.(Kemmel mill) (French monument on Kemmel hill is Locre...) The mill was close to "Kattekerkhof". also called "Terrieremolen" Hi Frie, the 'vindmill' I was referring to was not on the Letteberg, which is north of the Kemmelberg. This one is southwest. frie Posted 8 March , 2010 Share Posted 8 March , 2010 Should be the Monteberg Mill (Schraegemolen)
Joris Ryckeboer Posted 8 March , 2010 Share Posted 8 March , 2010 That's the one I think too, Frie. Do you have the location of the Monteberg Mill at the 1840-map? But does the name Louismolenberg (Koen Baert found that name) means something to you?
SiegeGunner Posted 8 March , 2010 Share Posted 8 March , 2010 If I'm not mistaken, this is the second day running that our Belgian pals have been lost in their own country ...

Aurel Sercu Posted 8 March , 2010 Share Posted 8 March , 2010 Mick, Belgians cannot get lost in their own country. They don't have one ! *** Well, for fear of getting lost in my own area (yesterday was Potyze / Verloren Hoek indeed ) I won't try to find my way here in this W/Vindmill Story. I never fight windmills. :-) For it sounds pretty complicated. Especially since I read that Monteberg (and so : the Schraegemolen / Vindmill / Montebergmolen) and French Monument on Kemmel Hill is Loker ! SiegeGunner Posted 8 March , 2010 Share Posted 8 March , 2010 Seriously, though, gentlemen, the forum is very fortunate to have the benefit of your collective expertise and local knowledge.

roel22 Posted 8 March , 2010 Author Share Posted 8 March , 2010 Looking at my initial question I would say the position of the dugouts is in the woods between Montebergstraat and Kleine Kemmelstraat in post #7. Roel
