sotonmate Posted 5 March , 2010 Share Posted 5 March , 2010 Theo The 15/17th War Diary is digital and downloadable for 3.50 from the NA Catalogue. WO95/2361 and runs from Jan 1918 to Feb 1919. This unit was with 93 Bde of 31 Division. According to the LLT this Div was "loaned out" to XI Corps of the First Army for the Action at Le Becque on 28 June 1918,not sure where it appears next, but the Diary will say. 593jones Posted 7 July , 2016 Share Posted 7 July , 2016 To reactivate this thread, I work with a member of Walter Saxton's family, she has started to look into her family history and is interested in Walter. Is there any way of finding out for what action and the date Walter received the MM? I know DCM citatiions are available online, but I don't know about the MM. She has found out that he was in Bath Military Hospital, but doesn't have a date for this either. Any help would be appreciated.
BFBSM Posted 7 July , 2016 Share Posted 7 July , 2016 (edited) The London Gazette of 11 November, 1916 shows he had been awarded the Military Medal, https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/issue/29819/supplement/10930, so it would have been prior to this when serving with the 10th KOYLI. If you look at the Battalion War Diary, things may get cleared up a little. The diaries can be downloaded direct from the National archives for £3.45 http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C7353177. 593jones Posted 8 July , 2016 Share Posted 8 July , 2016 Mark, Thanks for the info and the images you sent, I'll pass them on to my colleague, I'm sure she will be very grateful. The Gazette is very helpful, giving a date to start looking for info on Walter's award, possibly the local press might be able to provide something, the Barnsley Chronicle archives might be a place to start. Thanks again, Mark, it's much appreciated. Dave
