Hi I have a single British War Medal named to:

LIEUT. E.R. LINGEN-BURTON R.N.R.

so far I think I have found his full name as

Edward Robert

and that he was granted by the King to bear the Arms of Burton London Gazette 1919 but excepting this can find very little about him.

The family appear to have been quite well to do in the Shrewsbury, Shropshire area and wondered if anyone had any further information on him?

many thanks

Peter

Hello Peter,

From some Navy Lists.

Navy List, September 1915.

Midshipman Edward R. Lingen-Burton RNR, seniority 1. Apr. 13, appointed to the armed merchant cruiser Carmania, August 1914. On the 14th September 1914 Carmania was awarded the Battle Honour "Cap Trafalgar" for the single ship action in which she sunk the German commerce raider of that name. The dates fit for him being there for the battle.

Navy List October 1917.

Mid. RNR [Act. Sub-Lt.], appointed to the armed merchant cruiser Almanzora, 27. Jul. 1916.

Navy List December 1918.

Sub-Lt. RNR [Act. Lt.], appointed to the torpedo boat destroyer Rother, 30. Nov. 17.

You might have more answers if you put this in the Ships and Navies section of the Forum.

Regards,

David.

Numerous pictures of Carmania http://www.greatships.net/carmania.html

Modal of Almanzora http://www.nmm.ac.uk/collections/explore/o....cfm?ID=SLR1420 postcard http://www.simplonpc.co.uk/RMSP2.html#anchor17193

His WWI Campaign medals will be listed in ADM 171/92 on Microfilm at Kew; I'd expect him to have a 1914/15 Star trio.

Hi Ruby,

many thanks for your history-my enquiry on the forum was due to little information being availale and as you can see on the replies we now know the ships he served on.

He appeared in the London Gazette as per the permission to use the Burton cot of arms and then your further information is all we have thus far,

kind regards

Peter

There's quite a lot written about the Carmania's action with the Cap Trafalgar; check out the book "The ship that hunted itself", can't remember the authors name, quick ref to the great Lord Google should turn it up. Published in the early 70's, I think. I have a copy, but can't lay my hands on it right now. Don't remember his name being mentioned, but it is some time since I read it.

The basic story is that each ship was very poorly armed, and by a bizarre coincidence they each disguised themselves as the other while on the look-out for enemy shipping off the coast of Brazil in the very early days of WW1. They eventually met and in a very odd engagement the Carmania sunk the Cap Trafalgar.

Hope that's of interest.
