J T Gray Posted 1 March , 2010 Share Posted 1 March , 2010 This pic was in an album I scanned (and must get up here when - ha ha - I get time). It is captioned as "Sgt Tyndell" and, as most of the photos are patients in the VAD hospital at Shepreth, Cambs, in early 1919, I wonder whether this might be the original site of nearby Fowlmere aerodrome? I know there's sweet fanny adams in the way of clues, other than what must surely be a flying outfit, but can anyone make more from it than I can? The Inspector Posted 1 March , 2010 Share Posted 1 March , 2010 Hi Here's a very long shot. The 1901 census brings up only 12 Tyndell's. Only 3 are male and all from the same family. Frederick William b.1886,Charles J. b.1887 and Albert born 1897. How old do you reckon Sgt.Tyndell is???? Ok so he might not be English but you never know, but on this forum someone always knows. J T Gray Posted 2 March , 2010 Author Share Posted 2 March , 2010 You never know, Barry. Think I need to bone up on my early RAF records, though (assuming that, like the rest of the album, it's a 1919 photo). Adrian
The Inspector Posted 2 March , 2010 Share Posted 2 March , 2010 Hi Adrian Could he be American? I think Fowlmere was used by them from March 1918 Regards Barry
J T Gray Posted 6 January , 2011 Author Share Posted 6 January , 2011 At risk of thread necromancy, here's a picture of the cropmarks from the WW1 Fowlmere airfield. http://www.content-delivery.co.uk/aviation/airfields/regional/Cambridgeshire/Fowlmere.html Zoom in 2 clicks, and look to the NW of the London Road. It's even tree studded, though they don't seem to have Street View-ed the road so I can't see how old the trees are. Of course, it's Cricket Bat Willow country, so they could have been replaced several times. Adrian
