Dave

He was born on 4th February 1888 and died 1st June 1970, he also had service in the WWII. I have his obituary from the British Medical Journal and if you send me a PM with your email address I'll send it on to you.

He has three Medal Index Cards,it's a shame that two of the listed entries download to a completely different person ! The only relevant one seen covers his three campaign medals, date into first war theatre,France on 13.4.1915, and notes that he won the DSO and the MC. I imagine the other two refer to his MIDs/DSO/MC.

There are two Officer Service records at Kew in the WO339 series, 115643 and 138727,both are for GREAVES S,so until you look you won't know which is his, though someone here might have the WO338 index which might identify his.

The back of the MIC shows an address: St John's Lodge,Wakefield.Yorks.

Hi Sottonmate

Any chance of you down loading the MIC's for me as I don't have access to Ancestry, I have his LG entries for DSO and MC, but can't find the entries for his 4 MID's, which is probably what you refer to. Many thanks for your help Regards DaveC

The additional medal cards refer to two of the Mentions. First one dated 15 June 1916, p. 5957. Second one 24 December 1917, p. 10480. That should give you enough to find them in the Gazette. Remeber to start your search a few days earlier than the dates given, as supplements are indexed under the date of the original issue to which they were a supplement.

Many thanks David, I found LG 15/07/1916 Page 5957, but having difficulty locating 24/12/1917 Page 10480 as he's not mentioned on this page I've tried either side of this date but no luck, I'll keep trying. I wonder if the other two MID's are for WW2, Once again many thanks DaveC

I know it's a while since you posted on this but in case you're still interested Sam Greaves was my grandfather and I have his medals on the wall next to my desk. I also have the documentation about his time in the R.A.M.C during the war and the medals and mentions. Adrian Pennink

Just by coincidence we were reading some old documents overthe weekend and found one named ‘The Life of a Man of Medicine Spent in theService of Mankind in Peace & War’. This was written by Eva Greaves (I guess your Grandma). This was with all the war medals, photo’s andother memorabilia of Edgar Jones who was mentioned in the document and appearedto be a close friend of your Grandfathers. It was a pleasure to read and nice to see youhave just recently posted in the forum. RegardsCarine
