Guidinha Posted 28 February , 2010 Share Posted 28 February , 2010 Hello to all. I'm a history teacher working on a small town in Portugal called Vila do Bispo. I'm interested in finding informations about soldiers from this region that wore in the 1st world war. I know that they existed because my great grandfather was one of them. I've asked my students to ask at home about their own families, and I got two positive responses... but I'm still waiting and there could be more. I'm also planing on asking my colleges at school to do the same inquiries with theirs kids. Apart from that I've started some research at the local historical arquives and found some manuscripts, that could give me some ndirect information, but I've found no direct information ( I'm traing to read in my spare time). I do not have much information about about soldiers from this region. My great grandfather died when I was a small child, and I just have what my family remembers about him. I have no real oficial documents. (I have in my posession the military records from my father and grandfather... but not his). This I what 've been told: - My great grandfather was in France, he was with British Army and during that time he learned to speak english (but he did not know how to read or write in portuguese). - From that time he brought a passion for maps and could indicate any place or country on a map just by looking at it. - Hiss name is Joaquim Inácio Cintra. - But is possible that is parents didn't include the last name in birth registration (my grand mother was born before he went to war and in her records he was just Joaquim Inácio). But when he was older (already a grandfather) and he got is firs ID Card, he was Joaquim Inácio Cintra. - He's from a small village called Raposeira, more specificly from an area called ingrina. Because of that he was also called Joaquim da Ingrina (Joaquim from Ingrina). And latter on moved to Sagres, some miles away. - My grandmother was born about one year before he went to war, in 1915, and that means he went there around 1916. And I have strange a story from one of my students. - His great great grandfather went to France but he never went in to combat. The boy doesn't really know what happened, but his great great grandfather and some other colleges got in to some problems with the british and they wore put under arrest and latter on transported back to Portugal. I'm looking for informations regarding portuguese soldiers from this region. But any information about portuguese soldiers in the Great War will be welcomed. I've been reading this forum and you look the best persons to help me with specific information, and/or with ideas of how I could direct my research. Chris_Baker Posted 28 February , 2010 Share Posted 28 February , 2010 Welcome Guidinha I am afraid that I do not know how to research an individual soldier, but you might get some information by looking at the units that were raised nearby. I believe the closest to you may be 4 Batalhăo, which was based in Faro. It was under command of 5 Brigada, which was itself part of 2 Divisăo. This was one of two making up the Corpo Expedicionário Portuguese. Could there be records held in Faro?
Terry_Reeves Posted 28 February , 2010 Share Posted 28 February , 2010 Guidinha This link may help to put you on the the trail, in particular the author: http://www.worldwar1.com/france/portugal.htm It may be that your local military unit may be able to point you in the right direction. A few years ago I received some help from the First Infantry Regiment at Tavira. TR

As you can see: http://adfaro.algarvedigital.pt/fndcol.htm I do have some some records in Vila do Bispo. I'm in in the process of reading them. The recruts from Vila do Bispo went to Lagos and not Faro. Lagos in on the records as the 33rd District (in Vila do Bispo I have official transcrips of correspondence between the Recrutmet Comission From Vila do Bispo and 33rd District in Faro and many other places... but not Faro. I'm still reading then, the problem is that when my classes are are over, the arquive is about to close... I only can get about an hour a day, a couple a days a week. If I can get the time I will check the Arquive in Lagos as something (it has no inventory online).

Contacting the local military is a good idea. I will do that.
