East Morton Posted 27 February , 2010 Share Posted 27 February , 2010 Hello. A friend has asked me to try and discover more about her grandfather 14621 Private James Henry Cox. He served with the 9th Battalion, South Staffordshire Regiment. My friend understands that he won the DCM while serving in Italy, can anyone help me confirm this. Any help would be much appreciated. sotonmate Posted 27 February , 2010 Share Posted 27 February , 2010 Gerry There are five Volumes of DCM Citations in the Library at the National Archives. They run from 1914 to 1920. The Battalion, which was a Pioneer unit, was in Italy from Nov 1917 to Mar 1919 and their War Diary is also at Kew under WO95/4233. There might be a citation there, but if you are seeking a look-up it will certainly be in the DCM records. This soldier seems to have sailed for France on 24.8.1915 with the Battalion on it's first landing there,War Diary for Aug 1915 to Oct 1917 is under WO95/2178,should your friend want to find out more of what went on with her GF. lancaster3880 Posted 27 February , 2010 Share Posted 27 February , 2010 Hello C.J. Yes this look's like my man, I would be really appreciated if you could send me his citation. Many thank's Gerry Gerry, sorry i could not get to you earlier, i have been watching the rubby, the citation reads:- "During the period 26th February to the 14th September 1918, he has shown great devotion to duty. On the 17th June whilst at San Sisto, the camp came under heavy shell fire , and the men had to take in deep dugouts. Two men where badly wounded and were unable to get to the saps. He showed great gallantry in dressing the wounded men and staying with them. After he had dressed them he got another man to bring a stretcher, and took the wounded men the the dressing station. The whole time the station was being heavily shelled. REGARDS, C.J.
