jainvince Posted 26 February , 2010 Share Posted 26 February , 2010 One of soldiers, Pte W T Jones serving with the 11th Kings Own Royal Lancaster Regiment was KIA on 12th july 1917. He has no known grave and his name is recorded on Thiepval Memorial. However, our only other information is that "he was killed in action in the normal trench warfare conditions on the Somme on Thursday the 12 July 1917". This information may have come from the local paper but it's all we have on where he fought. Can any knowledgeable pal provide a more detailed location? Thanks again Bernard
sotonmate Posted 28 February , 2010 Share Posted 28 February , 2010 Bernard Someone might have the War Diary for 11 KORLR for this period. It is under WO95/2611. The LLT has a map defining the line as at the German withdrawal from the Somme in April 1917,all you need to do is find where this Bn (120 Brigade of 40 Division) was deployed ! http://www.1914-1918.net/bat17.htm Sotonmate
jainvince Posted 3 March , 2010 Author Share Posted 3 March , 2010 I've re-titled the post as I still haven't got very far with my researches and the relevant war diary isn't immediately available on-line. Just wondering if any pal has details of where the 40th Division was during the summer of 1917 through their researches into other regiment within the Division. stoj22 Posted 3 March , 2010 Share Posted 3 March , 2010 The 11th K.O.R.L. were in the front line at Villers Plouich on the 12th July 1917. A raid was attempted on the night of the 12/13th but failed due to the thickness of the enemy wire. The battalion was relieved on the 13th July by the 13th East Surreys and moved back to Fifteen Ravine. 21396 Private W.T.Jones is listed along with two other men who were also KIA on the 12th, he was in 'D' Company. hope it helps, Steve. MartinWills Posted 3 March , 2010 Share Posted 3 March , 2010 Bernard, The War Diaries for pretty much all the Battalions are available on CD-ROM editions from the Museum in Lancaster. No need to wait for Kew to digitise them.
jainvince Posted 3 March , 2010 Author Share Posted 3 March , 2010 Martin and Steve Many thanks for the infomation. With around 400 soldiers being researched, the cost of discs and downloads adds up never mind the growing book collection and study trips. Parliamentary approval for the growing expenditure cannot always be guaranteed. However, the generosity of forum members is amazing. Thanks again for your help as it helps our soldiers to be remembered and their place in history better known. Bernard
