speedwobble Posted 26 February , 2010 Share Posted 26 February , 2010 I have discovered that my Great Uncle was killed whilst serving aboard HMS Daffodil in 1916. He was the only fatality resulting from a collision. His name was Robert Galbraith, Stoker 1st Class. I cannot find any details on the collision i.e. did it involve another vessel, where did it happen??? I was hoping someone could help me find out more. ARABIS Posted 26 February , 2010 Share Posted 26 February , 2010 Hello John, From, Danger Zone, by E. Keble Chatterton. "Meanwhile the sloop Daffodil had come into Haulbowline dry dock after collision with a Cork steamer, which had hit her so sharply on the starboard side as to cut her nearly in half. Three men in the engine room were scalded to death, and it was marvellous that Daffodil did not sink". David. Addendum. Robert Galbraith died 15 Dec. 16, Stoker Petty Officer John Buurma [HMS Daffodil] died 16 Dec. 16 from injuries received in the collision on the 15th. Don't know who the third casualty was. speedwobble Posted 26 February , 2010 Author Share Posted 26 February , 2010 Thank you ARABIS. I know they sent Roberts body home to Belfast and he is buried in the City Cemetery, so I guessed the incident happened somewhere round the British Isles. What a terrible way to die. I will be logging on to the National Archives site this weekend to download his service record. With your permission I will add your post to the family tree. ARABIS Posted 26 February , 2010 Share Posted 26 February , 2010 You are welcome John, I've also learned from your post as I did not know the date of the collision or who any of the casualties were. Regards, David.
