Desmond7 Posted 25 February , 2010 Share Posted 25 February , 2010 Friend has been given (!!!) a WW1 'tank mask' - the one with chain mail. Believes it is associated with someone called McNiece/McNeice ... rank possibly sergeant - maybe from Belfast. Have checked MICs - nothing springs out. Any Tank Corps experts around? husher1917 Posted 25 February , 2010 Share Posted 25 February , 2010 They were issued to officers and drivers to protect their eyes from machine gun and rifle bullet "splash". While the bullets hit against the outside of the tank. white hot fragments of the inside of the metal walls would fly about. The gunners and gearsman had to go without, but the "splash" was not the only hazard inside the tank in battle. I have the one from my grandfather, who was a driver and served in the Tank Corps from 1916 to 1919.
