Peter Woodger Posted 24 February , 2010 Share Posted 24 February , 2010 Hi I know, from where their dead are buried, that the 17th were in Belgium in the early days of August 1918 but where were they on the 15th? Peter
Stephen Nulty Posted 24 February , 2010 Share Posted 24 February , 2010 Peter In May of 1918, the 17th was reduced to training cadre. Paraphrasing from the history...... 10th May 1918 - billetted at Buysscheure "They were scarceley settled in when they were informed of the impending reoirganisation. The three battalions (17th, 18th, 19th) were to be reduced to training cadre and the surplus officers and men sent to the base" 13th May - All personnel not required for the cadre withdrawn to the Base. 15th May - Cadre moved to Woincourt. 16th May - Meneslies - affilciated to the 1/137th American regiment "The officers and men who formed them (the three battalions) were to go on serving to the end of the war, but they were split up, sent here and there, and their fortunes are difficult to follow". "The 17th Training Cadre was transferred to the 66th Division on ther 18th of June, to the 25th Division on 30th June, and then retruned to England with the division to be reformed. But the battalion did not again return to France, for in October the King's left Glasgow......as part of the North Russian Expeditionary Force". This suggests that the men to whom you refer were perhaps serving with another unit at the time, but the history does not tell us who that is. Peter Woodger Posted 24 February , 2010 Author Share Posted 24 February , 2010 Stephen Thank you for that very full answer. I was looking at L/C Chambers, KIA 15/08/1918 and buried in Ancre British. He stood out as the only King's Liverpool there but it looks as if he was with someone else. Peter
Stephen Nulty Posted 24 February , 2010 Share Posted 24 February , 2010 Peter CWGC shows him to be attached to 91st Bn, KOYLI. Would that posting make more sense?
Peter Woodger Posted 24 February , 2010 Author Share Posted 24 February , 2010 Stephen Silly me had forgotten to look there. 91st is a training battalion but there is another KOYLI in the cemetery with a similar date and he was in the 9th. Thanks again Peter
