Guest wendyel Posted 23 February , 2010 Share Posted 23 February , 2010 I know this is somewhat 'off topic' but wasn't too sure which would be the best place to post. I am hoping someone may know something about the Royal Artillery in 1870 - 1880, or may be able to point me in the right direction. I am trying to find out some military background history for my great grandfather, Charles Clark, born in about 1845. Charles' death certificate says he was an Army Pensioner and the 1871 Census shows him as a Private in 'D' Battery, 4th Brigade RA at the St Andrews barracks, Newcastle, Northumberland. He is absent from the 1881 census, so I wondered if he was abroad at the time and where he might have been stationed. Any information on where he and his soldiering may have taken him would be much appreciated. Thanks Wendyel

Please be aware the men transferred in and out of batteries on a regular basis so there is no guarantee that he served with the same battery from 1871 to 1883.
