roygibson2@btopenworld.com Posted 23 February , 2010 Share Posted 23 February , 2010 I am trying to find an approximate enlistment date for this soldier. He served in the 1st.Batt. Middlesex Regt. and his service number was G/34869.I have a copy of his MIC but there is no information as to date of entry or theatre of war. He was entitled to the Victory and War Medal pair only so I assume that he was probably conscripted in 1916.
Peridot Posted 23 February , 2010 Share Posted 23 February , 2010 On the assumption that no Service Record exists, you may glean some information from the Battalion War Diary-there is an electronic link to the National Archive on the Digitised War Diaries thread in the Units and Formations Sub-Forum which will tell you whether a copy can be downloaded. Sorry haven't mastered the art of inserting a link in a post yet!! Peridot

Verrico2009 Posted 23 February , 2010 Share Posted 23 February , 2010 Roy, There's quite a lot of records for various Charles Gibsons, but nothing answers to an exact match. It's possible there's some where the number's not been transcribed properly or at all, but this is where date and place of birth can help to narrow it down if they are there. However, you probably know that the service records suffered a lot of damage in WW2 and that only about 30% survived.
