Dear Terry

Thank you very much!! I'm sorry and I may seem a bit thick but , no I didn't know this and Thank you Very very much for telling me. I'm not used to doing this sort of thing - the research I mean. I don't have the foggiest as to how! It was only by chance that I found this wonderful site and I thought I'd give it a go .

Thank you again!

Margaret

Welcome to the forum Margaret,

Both His Majesty's Ship Queen Mary and the Battle of Jutland are detailed in several books such as 'Battlecruisers' by John Roberts.

and websites such as: http://www.worldwar1.co.uk/outcome.html

Your great-great-uncle served from 1899 so he would have been on many ships, which will be listed on the service register. If you want to know which medals he received they will be shown on the medal roll. This is on microfilm at Kew in ADM 171/112. I would be surprised if he did not have a 1914-15 Star trio that were sent to his widow.

Margaret,

Glad to be of help.

I do not think you are thick and neither I’m sure do most, if not all that participate here. Everybody has a steep learning curve initially. This forum is a great place, and probably the best for Great War related queries, and these often arise via family history research.

Best of luck with yours.

Cheers, Terry

You may want to check out if there are other family connections.

These have Bristol connections, but no obvious (to me) links, but maybe it;s worth you checking?

Margaret, No thanks are due to me, but to others who got there first. Certainly TcM59 provided the CWGC link. My mistake in not pointing out that I included him in the list of Pooles that could also be related to her enquiry, instead of editing him out...

Not wanting to take anything away from anyone's researches, we're all wanting to help.... It's possible that Margaret was unaware that TcM's link would take her to the same CWGC entry, due to her unfamiliarity with how things work.

Hi there Isabel and welcome

Unfortunately the date refers to his Date of Death...

Whilst his body may have been recovered, it wasn't possible to identify him, so whilst he may have a grave with a "Known Unto God" headstone, his name is carved on the Thiepval Memorial, to give relatives a focal point.

Commonwealth War Graves Commission Debt of Honour shows:-

Name: POOLE, ALFRED CHARLES RODERICK. Rank: Private

Regiment/Service: Royal Berkshire Regiment. Unit Text: 8th Bn.

Age: 21. Date of Death: 31/08/1916. Service No: 22089

Additional information: Son of Alfred Richard T. and Annie A. Poole, of 87, Church Rd., Redfield, Bristol.

Grave/Memorial Reference: Pier and Face 11 D. Memorial: THIEPVAL MEMORIAL

Soldiers Died in the Great War shows:-

Name: Alfred Charles Roderick Poole. Birth Place: Weston-On-Bath, Som.

Death Date: 31 Aug 1916 Death Location: France & Flanders. Enlistment Location: Bristol

Rank: Private. Regiment: Princess Charlotte of Wales's (Royal Berkshire Regiment). Battalion: 8th Battalion

Number: 22089. Type of Casualty: Killed in action. Theatre of War: Western European Theatre

Wow! Is that your Family Tree claiming him as a Plantagenet link?

At least I know what the "T" in his fathers Name is!

Annie Augusta was a Ballinger before marriage.

His Medal Index card on Ancestry shows entitlement to British War and Victory medals, so he wasn't in France before 1916, otherwise he would have also had the 1914-15 Star.

There may be some comfort in that although he wasn't there long, he died in action.

Some Pal may have the relevant days from the Battalion War Diary.

It doesn't seem that his Army records survived the Luftwaffe bombing in WW2

Hope it's of some help

That's amazing. Thank you so much for that information. My daughter is named for him (hope she doesn't mind) and i was looking for more info for her baby book. I'm amazed that you can know my great grandmother's maiden name! You are right, it was Ballinger. I don't know anything about any plantaganets, and I think the 'T' is for Theophilus.

I remember from childhood that Charles was my grandfather's favourite sibling, and he named my father's middle name for him (Alfred). I'd forgotten his real name was Alfred as my grandad referred to him as Charles. So my girl goes by Charles too. It is strange how it becomes important to us to connect our children with their past. We got her British citizenship and I wonder now if she'll ever care about Charles or her nationality. My sister named her girl for Annie. They all sacrificed so much for us.

Thanks again for your information. It's very helpful and I'm grateful to you.
