Alby Posted 20 February , 2010 Share Posted 20 February , 2010 There's a play at the Kings theatre in Portsmouth next month called Journey's end, based on the first world war. I might go and see it, and was wondering if anyones seen it before. Alby.
Moonraker Posted 20 February , 2010 Share Posted 20 February , 2010 Seen - and admired - by many of us, and much discussed - enter "Journey's End" into Beta Search (link above in blue). Moonraker
Alby Posted 20 February , 2010 Author Share Posted 20 February , 2010 Thanks Moonraker, I'll buy the tickets later. There's also someone giving a talk about the play, at the British legion club in Fratton soon, it's only £1 a ticket for the talk. Alby.
Alan Tucker Posted 20 February , 2010 Share Posted 20 February , 2010 See the latest edition of Stand To (WFA) for Sheriff's wartime service and speculation about who the play's characters were based upon.
centurion Posted 20 February , 2010 Share Posted 20 February , 2010 Saw it as a school play a long time ago, at least two members of the supervising staff had experienced the real thing.
MichaelBully Posted 20 February , 2010 Share Posted 20 February , 2010 Saw it as a school play a long time ago, at least two members of the supervising staff had experienced the real thing. I have never seen 'Journey's End' but have read the text of the play. Very keen to see it myself - have found this link http://www.thestage.co.uk/reviews/review.p...78/journeys-end which contains some information regarding this current production and a full list of dates. If anyone here listens to 'The Archers', they might be interested to know that Graeme Seed, who plays Nigel Pargetter in 'The Archers' is in this production as 'Osborne'. Alby Posted 21 February , 2010 Author Share Posted 21 February , 2010 If you buy a ticket to see journey's end in Portsmouth, you can go to a free screening of the Mel Gibson film Gallipoli, in the same week. Alby.

MichaelBully Posted 6 January , 2011 Share Posted 6 January , 2011 Hi Sea Jane The 2010 production -which took in Eastbourne and Portsmouth - started the thread as it were -but this latest production April 2011 is hitting Brighton but I can't see where else it is going to. If anyone feels like a Pals outing to Brighton that sounds good to me. With regard to the 2010 production, we had tickets for the Eastbourne performance but had to pull out of going at the very last minute. The peformance featured Graham Seed ( 'Nigel' from 'The Archers') who has made a bit of name for himself this week. Hi Laura, yes would be pleased to report back. Regards Michael Bully Thanks for the heads-up, I missed this when it was in Oxford so shall be glad to get across to Portsmouth and see it. Any offers for a Pals outing? Old Tom Posted 10 January , 2011 Share Posted 10 January , 2011 Like Centurion I recall seeing Journey's End as a school play in, I suppose, about 1945/6. I was a day boy and the timing of the play meantthat my parents and I missed the last bus and as a result walked home some 7 miles. Those were the days without traffic on main roads. Mark Hone Posted 10 January , 2011 Share Posted 10 January , 2011 It's doing a tour. A friend invited me to a performance at Stoke on Trent. Is it another outing for the West End production of a few years ago featuring David (My Boy Jack) Haig? I saw a tourting version of this at the Lowry Theatre in Salford. Liz in Eastbourne Posted 11 January , 2011 Share Posted 11 January , 2011 Is it another outing for the West End production of a few years ago featuring David (My Boy Jack) Haig? I saw a tourting version of this at the Lowry Theatre in Salford. I still have the 2004 programme for the production at the Comedy Theatre with a terrific cast including Geoffrey Streatfeild as Stanhope (the cast , as well as the theatre itself, for this production did change in the West End so I didn't see David Haig), and at the end the audience was so stunned none of us clapped. We just sat there in shocked silence. Eventually of course when the cast came back to take a bow, we did. Liz
tootrock Posted 11 January , 2011 Share Posted 11 January , 2011 I saw the production at the Comedy Theatre with David Haig. At the end the lights suddenly went out, and as we sat in the dark we were treated to a very loud stereophonic artillery barrage. When this finished the lights came up and the curtains had been closed. They then opened, and there were the cast, lined up in front of an apparently white wall (the dugout set was no longer visible). Applause followed, and then one could almost feel the emotion as the audience slowly realised that the wall was completely covered with names, as on a war memorial. Absolutely brilliant. seaJane Posted 18 January , 2011 Share Posted 18 January , 2011 MichaelBully, oops, I missed the date on the original post, didn't I? ... but Brighton is within reach so April this year is also a possibility. Let's plan...
MichaelBully Posted 22 January , 2011 Share Posted 22 January , 2011 The play is on Tuesday 5th April -Saturday 9th , evenings 7.45 and Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday matinee at 2.30.Theatre Royal Brighton, which is very central. My other half can't make Tuesday and Friday might clash with WFA meeting. My preferable dates are Wednesday or Thursday or Saturday matinee. If anyone interested in trying to meet up after the play, welcome to PM message me. I should also mention that this production is supporting the British Legion poppy appeal Michael Bully MichaelBully, oops, I missed the date on the original post, didn't I? ... but Brighton is within reach so April this year is also a possibility.
