Under the reorganization scheme of 1908 on disbandment of the till then existing 3rd Battalion, the 4th (Galway Militia) Battalion moved up into its place, and the former 5th (Roscommon Militia) Battalion, in like manner, became the 4th (Special Reserve) Battalion. It was located on the banks of the River Lee, Middlesex, North London 12 March 1910 Warrant Officers who had specialist training would receive a bonus. For example being trained in shorthand could result in a bonus of £7 per annum. The Small Arms Committee (SAC) and the Chief Inspector of Small Arms (CISA) were England's leading authorities for the critical evaluation of new military innovations/inventions. The test’s was conducted at Enfield Lock. The Small Arms School Corps (S.A.S.C.) was a small corps. Its role to assist Regular and Territorial Army Infantry training units and battalions to achieve and maintain training standards for Small Arms and Support Weapons as decided by the Director of Infantry. Some of its secondary roles : - Small Arms and Support Weapons training; Small Arms Range Courses and Support Weapons concentrations (held on designated ranges ideally once every year); Range Safety and the associated danger areas; The Development of Small Arms and Support Weapons. In certain extra reserve battalions local conditions, such as the requirements of labour and agriculture, make it desirable that the training of the recruits should not, except in a few individual cases, be carried on during certain seasons of the year, and in these cases the period during which the recruits are not under training may extend to six months. This was the case with the depots referred to. The Battalion mustered at Oranmore for one months Camp training 12 July 1912 Very unpleasant weather was experienced during the training. The Times ‘Our Dublin Correspondent telegraphs that a good deal of resentment is felt in Galway at the refusal of Dr. O'Dea, the Roman Catholic Bishop of the diocese, to allow the acting chaplain to the troops in the district to take part in the ceremony of receiving the old colours of the 4th Battalion Connaught Rangers and depositing them in the regimental chapel at Renmore. Last November the old colours of the 2nd Battalion of the same regiment were placed in the chapel and were accepted by the chaplain, Father Newell. The ceremony of depositing the colours of the 4th Battalion was to have taken place yesterday, but had to be postponed because the Bishop had informed the chaplain that he had to refuse to give his sanction to his taking part in the ceremony. It is said that the ground of Dr. O'Dea's objection is that he sees no reason why such flags should be deposited in a place of worship and he considers a museum a more suitable place.’ 26 July 1912 4th Battalion, The Connaught Rangers Annual training finished 27 July 1912 New Colours presented to the 4th Battalion during a parade. Followed by a football match between ‘B’ and ‘E’ Company teams the final of a competition run between the companies during the Annual training. The Times ‘As regards the alleged refusal of the Roman Catholic Bishop of Galway to allow the old colours of the 4th Battalion of the Connaught Rangers to be deposited in the military chapel at Renmore, Galway, on Thursday, it is reported that Father Newell, the military chaplain, and Father Monaghan attended at Renmore Barracks on Friday and expressed their willingness to receive the colours at any time that it was convenient for the regiment to attend, As all the arrangements had been cancelled on Thursday evening the chaplain and Major Sarsfield, the officer commanding at Galway, drove to Oranmore camp, where they saw Colonel Hammond, C B who, it is said, declined again to arrange for the ceremony after what had occurred.’ ‘The Freeman's Journal stated that the Bishop, when shown a newspaper cutting of his alleged refusal to allow the colours to be deposited in Renmore chapel, said that the facts were wholly misrepresented in the paragraph. When the request was made to him that the colours should be deposited in the military chapel at Renmore he asked that this request should not be pressed on the ground that only sacred objects could fittingly be deposited in the House of God. Ultimately he allowed the chaplain to act on his own responsibility in the matter, and it was acting on his own responsibility that Father Newell went to Renmore barracks. When the colours of another battalion of the regiment were deposited in Renmore barracks six months ago Dr. O'Dea was in Rome, and was not consulted on the subject. A newspaper correspondent who saw Major Sarsfield on Saturday says that that officer stated that the report of the matter which appeared in Friday morning's newspapers was correct. Killed in action Monday, 26 April 1915, age 37, on the southern lobe of the 400 Plateau ('Lone Pine'), central Anzac sector, Gallipoli. Major Richard Saker, who received his commission as 2nd Lieutenant in the 5th Battalion Connaught Rangers in October, 1901, had served in the South African War, 1900-2 with the Rough Riders, being present at operations in Cape Colony, the Transvaal, including the action near Diamond Hill, and East of Pretoria. He also took part in operations in the Transvaal, west of Pretoria, including the actions at Zilikats Nek and Elands River: he received the Queen's medal with five clasps. In Feb 1907, he became Captain in the Reserve of Officers, and when the War broke out he was called up for service and was attached as Major to the 5th Battalion Australian Infantry with the rank of Major. Mr. DORIS Asked the Secretary of State for War whether Irishmen on joining the Army in England are informed that it is necessary to make claims in writing on a prescribed form and within a prescribed time for separation allowances for their dependants; and, if not, will he have an order issued that recruits shall be so informed in future and that, in the cases of those who have already enlisted and who, through ignorance of the Regulations, have not complied with them, the claims of dependants will be received and considered after the prescribed time? Mr. FORSTER The answer to the first part of the question is in the affirmative, but I may say that in any case where it appears that a claim was not made within the prescribed time owing to a genuine misunderstanding or for some special reason it is the practice of the War Office to admit a claim for investigation. johndregg Posted 15 March , 2010 Share Posted 15 March , 2010 HANSARD Question in House of Commons ‘whether he is aware that Private John McKeever, No. 4/7535, 4th Battalion, Connaught Rangers, who enlisted at Belfast on the 7th August last, was born on 22nd February, 1900, and is therefore not yet seventeen years of age, and that, when his father made application for his discharge, he was informed by the Infantry Record Office, No. 12 District, Cork, that the boy would not be discharged but would be held to serve at home until he was nineteen, and would not be sent for service overseas until then; whether there is any authority for the retention of this boy, and, if so, what is it; whether he will have this case inquired into with a view to the boy's discharge’ 22 Dec 1916 This is actually my grandfather. we just received his birth certificate this morning from the records office in Glasgow (where he was born) which confirms that this was him. We had quite a bit of trouble unearthing his history in the rangers due to the fact that he finished the war as part of 7th batt Royal Irish Regiment (reg no6387), wounded during the early part of 1918 probably during the German offensive near St Quentin. Family legend always had him as an under age connaught ranger who was a regimental bugler but all medals have disappeared over the years and the exact details have been lost by us. mhifle Posted 19 March , 2010 Author Share Posted 19 March , 2010 Hi, The 7th (South Irish Horse) Battalion, Royal Irish Regiment was formed 1 Sept 1917 On 26 June 1918 Irish reinforcements arrived at the 7th Battalion composed of 500 Royal Dublin Fusiliers, 250 Royal Munster Fusiliers, and 85 Royal Irish Regment. I have come across men from the 4th Battalion Connaught Rangers transferred to the 4th Battalion Royal Irish Regiment in July 1917 and then transferred to the 7th Battalion Royal Irish Regiment 26 June 198. For example 4/6732 Private Michael Coffey 4th Connaught Rangers (enlisted 14 April 1914 aged 18) later transferred as 4/6176 to 4th Battalion Royal Irish Regiment 4 July 1917 and then transferred 26 June 1918 to 7th Battalion Royal Irish Regiment No 6319 was issued on 13 July 1917 in 4th Battalion Royal Irish Regiment I also came across this with the 3rd Battalion Connaught Rangers. A draft of 3 Category A4 men (A4: boys under nineteen years of age) were sent to the 4th Royal Irish Regiment (Young Soldiers Battalion), based in Queenstown, Ireland 19 Oct 1917. So maybe the 3rd and 4th Connaught Rangers transferred all its Category A4 men to the 4th Royal Irish Regiment during 1917. Just two things: 1) The line "3950 Private John Fleming (killed in action Near the village of Serain in the Department of Aisne with 5th Battalion 8 Oct 1918, His body was recovered by his brother Patrick, also a private in the Rangers)" should read 3950 Private Michael Fleming. 2) Where did you get the info re Patrick recovering his body. I ask this as Patrick is my Grandfather and the information re him recovering the body is correct & it is what we have been told in the family. stilllooking Posted 15 November , 2011 Share Posted 15 November , 2011 Great work Mark. I read your history of the 4th Connacht Rangers and was amazed it was so indepth. I hadn't been aware that so many men from the 4th were transfered to the 2nd Bn in France. Can you tell me if there is a similar record regarding the 5th Bn. I posted about 2 years ago in my search for the service history of my great grandfather. I was thrown a red herring in that the family said he fought in France yet the 5th didn't see action till Gallipoli. I'm aware now that the 4th was a reserve Bn whereas the 5th was a service Bn so the chances of being transfered from the 5th isn't as likely but I'm going on the chance that they would have taken all the fully trained men they could get. I have read the war diaries of the 2nd but there is no mention of where they got their recruits from. His details are Denis Condon, 3513 5th Bn Connacht Rangers, died in Dublin 02/01/1915. The family story was that he came back from france where he spent time in hospital before passing away and is now buried in Grangegorman. There is no mention on the Medal roll index cards but I don't know is this because of the fire in WW2. I suppose if I knew he went to France and had a rough date then I could narrow down what happened to him, which is more than likely injuries sustained in 1st Ypres around Polygone Wood but at the moment this is all guessing. I'd really appreciate any possible leads at all. I'm running out of paths to go down in my research so any help at all would be great. Tim. mhifle Posted 15 November , 2011 Author Share Posted 15 November , 2011 Hi Tim, If his regimental number 3513 is from enlisting into the 5th Battalion, he would have enlisted around the 5th Sept 1914, and in Jan 1915 the 5th Battalion was based in The Royal Barracks, Arbour Square & Horse Square, Dublin. If he was in France there is a chance he was already serving in the Special Reserve, and regimental number 3513 would have him enlisting into the 3rd Battalion Connaught Rangers Sept 1908 which I think would have him aged 17/18, if he was aged 24 when he died in Jan 1915. So it could be possible he had been sent out with a draft to the 2nd Battalion in France and evacuated back home sick/wounded and then been posted to the 5th Battalion prior to his death in Jan 1915. All I can find is that he enlisted in Cork, and the CWGC has Additional information: Husband of K. Condon, of 7, Lady's Well Hill, Cork. Vol 2 covers 2nd Bn in the Great War. I think that my Great Grandfather was 4649 Private Thomas McDonagh (transferred Worcestershire Regiment no.47713). I was wondering if you had any further information on him? If he was born in 1878 (according to the 1911 Census) then this is him. If a soldier was transferred to another regiment how do you find out what happened to him later on into the war? Would he just be filling up another regiment due to his own regiment getting too small in number or did it mean he got injured and had to be transferred? My Grandmother told me that he was lost at sea and the only photo we have of him is of him in a navy/marine outfit (I have posted this photo of him in my gallery). Another relative of mine told me he was based at the Renmore Barracks in Galway during pre-war years. Did the Connaught Rangers who went to the Eastern Mediterranean front i.e. Gallipoli, Salonika wear marine outfits while travelling to these foreign territories while still being soldiers also? Transferred to the Worcestershire Regiment maybe around Nov/Dec1915. Discharged due to wounds 29 May 1917. Silver War Badge no.179793. He may have joined the Royal Navy then afterwards or the merchant navy. I will try and rule out any Royal/Merchant Navy connection just in case my relative was wrong about him being in the Connaught Rangers.
