Keith

If you can post details of when he died, it might help someone with knowledge of the West Yorks to answer your query.

BE Whiteley

Hi, According to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission he died August 8, 1919 after the end of the war.

Maybe someone can check Soldiers Died to see if there is any more information.

Take care,

Neil

SDGW gives date of death 28/08/18 and "Killed in action". Unit 7th Bn West Yorks. So with the 49th Division. Perhaps one of Pals who specialise in the West Yorks Regt can elucidate further?

Hi Keith.

The following is from Everard Wyrall, West Yorkshire Regiment in the War 1914-1918.

The Second Battles of Arras, 1918.

The Battle of the Scarpe, 1918: 26th-30th August.

2nd Battalion, West Yorkshire Regiment.

19th August.

On the 19th, the West Yorkshires relieved the Middlesex in the front line, Battalion Headquarters being just north of Farbus Station. Active patrolling was carried out each night, but the enemy was still deluging the line with gas shells, and on the nightof 23rd/24th no less than 90 casualties were suffered in "B" and "D" Companies; 4 more officers were also "gassed". As a result of the successful attack by the Canadians on Monchy on the 26th August, the enemy evacuated the Arleux Loop opposite the 23rd Brigade front and the Brigade line was immediately advanced, but the enemy still held on to Britannia Trench, which he defended by bombing parties and machine guns.

Two platoons, each from "A" and "C" Companies of the West Yorkshires, tried to get into Britannia Trench on the night of the 28th, but it was too well wired to admit of penetration without artillery bombardment. In this attempt Second-Lieut. B.E. Whiteley was killed. The following evening two platoons from "B" Company did succeed in advancing up Oak Alley and establishing a post at Winnipeg Road, but the enemy's resistance was too strong and it was impossible to get further. On the 31st the 23rd Brigade was ordered to consolidate its line as no further offensive action was to be taken for the present.

Looks like your man Keith was attached to the 2nd Battalion. One thing for sure, CWWG date of death is incorrect. Maybe Terry could Help?

Regards, Chris.

Keith

Benjamin Eric Whiteley is commemorated on the Ripponden War Memorial.

Other than the details on the CWGC site all I have been able to find out is that he attended Rishworth School, and was killed while leading a patrol.

I think I got the additional information from a local paper of the time.

What is your interest in this man if you don't mind me asking.

I wonder if he could be any relation to Benjamin Frederick ('Fred') Whiteley, who was briefly in the Leeds Rifles before going south in 1899 and enlisting in the KRRC for the Boer War; stayed in as a Regular, DCM 1914, commissioned, wounded, later service in MGC, retired as Captain in 1921. Died in 1958..

Just a thought!

The CWGC record for this man contains a scanning error. The original register shows the date of death as 28.08.18.

I have requested the correction to be made.

CWGC amended Lt Whiteley's year of death to 1918 this morning.

It will appear when the next update to their website data takes place.
