John Gilinsky Posted 11 February , 2010 Share Posted 11 February , 2010 Here in Canada I have come across some contemporary press reports from around October 1914 that the 2nd. Canadian Contingent was being considered being sent to South Africa to suppress the rebellion by some Boers there. Presumably this was because the British thought that the war would end by Christmas and that many South African veterans were living in Canada. Is there ANY validity to such press reports in official documents, official diplomatic correspondence in, to or about South Africa? Thanks, John Toronto
Mike763222 Posted 11 February , 2010 Share Posted 11 February , 2010 John, That sounds like a bit of propaganda akin to the story that Russian troops were marching through Britain en route to the Western Front. Do any of the press reports give the source of the info? Mike
John Gilinsky Posted 13 February , 2010 Author Share Posted 13 February , 2010 Thanks Mike. No the couple of references do not give references nor quotes. They simply refer to the fact that some governmental circles were considering sending the Canadians (2nd. Contingent or parts of it)to South Africa to deal with the troubles there. Does anyone have access to the Colonial Office records and ministerial correspondence for same covering both Canada and South Africa for October 1914 etc...?
