Guest Bill Woerlee Posted 7 February , 2010 Share Posted 7 February , 2010 Mates In my readings about the Light Horse in Australia, one theme comes up often, the number of Australians serving in South Africa. The early Australian casualty lists give the following names of Australians serving in South African mounted formations who became casualties in the early part of the war. Wounded in 1914 Rifleman WO McDougall, South African Mounted Rifles Corporal S Phelps, Natal Light Horse Trooper B McMahon, Natal Light Horse Sergeant E Burns, Imperial Light Horse 1915 464 Corporal CR Handfield, "C" Squadron, Natal Light Horse, KIA, 6 May 1915. I am wondering if some of the experts in this area might give some guidance as to how these men were employed to place them in danger, and whether there were quite a few Australians deliberately recruited for this purpose. Cheers Bill
