Mark Hone Posted 9 May , 2004 Share Posted 9 May , 2004 A regular unit. They had a very distinguished war, winning the famous '6VCs before breakfast' at Gallipoli on 25th April 1915. Footage of them on the First Day of The Somme near Beaumont Hamel features heavily in the Geoffrey Malins documentary. They took part in all the principal battles on the Western Front from 1916 onwards, winning a seventh VC (Sergeant Joseph Lister) during Third Ypres. I would be very interested to learn the provenance of the bayonet you have.
museumtom Posted 9 May , 2004 Author Share Posted 9 May , 2004 The bayonet has no provenance and was not sold as a unit marked bayonet. It was in a lot of three bayonets and two scabbards on ebay. I just bought them to complete my 1917 SMLE. It is the 1907 pattern made by wilkinson and issued in August 1918. The one I really wanted was the 1907 pattern Nov 1916 issued bayonet, the other one I have not seen the marks on it yet. Tom
