Waddell Posted 30 December , 2009 Share Posted 30 December , 2009 I came across a reference to this camp in a letter from an AIF soldier stopping off in Capetown for three days in August 1916. "Yesterday we had a long 5 miles march to Camp Vaag". I can't find any references to it but note that there is a Camps Bay near Capetown. Any ideas? Were these camps used for stop overs or did the AIF men remain aboard ship at night? Scott
HERITAGE PLUS Posted 30 December , 2009 Share Posted 30 December , 2009 Scott Camps Bay did not get its name from a camp or camps Its name comes from the anglicization of its 18th Century name 'Die Baai van von Kamptz' This was after a sailor Frederick von Kamptz who set his cap at marrying a widow who had inherited the land. Waddell Posted 30 December , 2009 Author Share Posted 30 December , 2009 Thanks for the information about Camps Bay Dave. I thought they may have marched there as I cannot find any references to camps in Capetown itself and it looks within five miles from the town itself. Will keep looking.
