ph0ebus Posted 23 December , 2009 Posted 23 December , 2009 Hi all, I am researching the origins of the metal used in the Victory Liberty Loan medals that were forged from the metal from captured German Cannons siezed by the US forces at Chateau Thierry. Can someone tell me which specific German Artillery Units were defeated by the Americans at Chateau Thierry and whose cannons likely ended up in these medals? Thanks, -Daniel

Thanks, -Daniel Daniel, Interesting question. I have one of those medals that I picked up at a flea market when I was a kid. I often wondered if it was really made from a captured cannon! Paul
ph0ebus Posted 26 December , 2009 Author Posted 26 December , 2009 Daniel, Interesting question. I have one of those medals that I picked up at a flea market when I was a kid. I often wondered if it was really made from a captured cannon! Paul Hi Paul, It seems to be true; other than the statement on the medal itself there are numerous accounts in the press about it. Given these were created via the US Treasury, there may be something to be gained by reaching out to them for info that could corroborate the press accounts. I will try pursuing that angle but in the intereim if one of the resident historians happens to know a bit about the Prussian FAR forces at Chateau Thierry, that would be fantastic. I hope all had a nice holiday and may the new year bring health, wealth and happiness to all. -Daniel
