Cotswold Posted 18 December , 2009 Share Posted 18 December , 2009 There's an inscription on a grave on the Somme which reads "One of the white men". Phrases like 'Play The White Man' are very much part of contemporary literature of that period. I have seen the epitaph Paul mentions but cannot be 100% certain of which cemetery it is in but Flatiron Copse keeps springing to mind??

What a Lovely War" when the Staff Officer (Major Mallory) visits the trenches after the gas attack, he ends his speech with " as long as we can all keep smiling you're white men all" Steve.
