Jonathan Saunders Posted 27 February , 2003 Share Posted 27 February , 2003 My understanding is until 1918 the minimum age for service in a theatre of war was 19. My question is in three parts: Were there any exceptions to this, such as bugler? (Obviously Boy service in the Royal Navy being a total exception). Did the age of 19 apply to all theatres of war ie. Middle East, (was India regarded a theatre of war??) When was the age reduced to 18? Sorry thats four questions really. Many thanks in advance. Andrew P Posted 28 February , 2003 Share Posted 28 February , 2003 In researching members of the AIF I have found from 1914 onwards that there were quite a few who were 18 at the time of enlistment, even when the minimum age was 21. I believe that initially if you were aged 18-20 you had to get a consent form filled out by your parents enabling you to enlist and therefore see service in an active theatre. In Australia at least my understanding was that by 1916 people aged 18 didn't need to get a consent form anymore. Don't know if the same took place for enlistment in Britain. If I'm wrong in my understanding of this I hope someone will correct me. Cheers Andrew
