Alfred Marsh memorial ribbon

An old friend of mine, in his 90,s and has the superb christian name of Noah, sent me a photograph of the attached memorial ribbon. He was wondering if I could provide him with any details of Alfred Marsh who died on 30th June 1916/18 aged 25 years old. Disparity in date as the bend in the ribbon falls right across the details. If the picture on the ribbon cannot be seen clearly he is shown as wearing what looks like army uniform.

He said in his letter to me:

"The original ribbons were in a collection of memorabilia of a Mr Walter Harrison of Mersey Road, Widnes. He was a Victorian gentleman whose family lived back to back to me in James Street, West Bank, Widnes. I met his grandaughter on a cruise on the S.S. Canberra in 1987. I had known her as a child, but this was 60 years later. She had left Widnes in 1943, joined the Wrens, married and later resided in London."

I have checked on the CWGC site, no trace of him.

Pte Joseph Gandy is recorded on the Widnes War memorial but Alfred Marsh is not. Any one assist me with checks of MIC indexes etc.. so I can pass on the answer to Noah.

Thanks

Harry

Hi.

Alfred Marsh's death was recorded in the Prescot RD (includes Widnes) in the June 1/4 of 1918.

Marsh Alfred 25 Prescot 8b 815

Thus, he may well have been discharged from the Army at the time of his death and so not commemorated by the CWGC. You will need to obtain his Death Certificate for more details, and to check as to whether he has been missed for commemoration.

Best wishes.

Andy.

Record states Chronic Asthma and Bronchitis due to Active Service so if Death Cert quantifies this its a good case to put forward to MOD as a Non-commemorated Soldier.

Discharged April 18, Died June 18 with a pension awarded.

Thanks to all who contributed, based on this info I will do a bit more searching locally and try and put him forward as a non commemoration. If this is successful I will also try and contact any local family members and hopefully add his name to the Widnes War Memorial.

Thanks again.

Harry
