micks Posted 7 December , 2009 Posted 7 December , 2009 Hi all I,m assisting a close friend reconstruct the events which led to the death of her great uncle at Meteren on the 24th April 1918. Although the war diaries of the other battalions of the 3rd Brigade for that morning are detailed the eleventh unfortunately contains little. Red cross reports and the official history give some additional information regarding the attack but the position of C company is somewhat confusing as the remainder of the battalion went into reserve late on the 23rd. Does anybody know if Legs Eleven or Fremantle to France contains any information which may resolve this ? Any help would be appreciated Mick
devonmaid Posted 7 December , 2009 Posted 7 December , 2009 Mick Im sorry i can't help with any details leading up to the death of Pte. Norbert Leo Smyth No 6815. Although he has quite a detailed service history on the Australia National Archives site ( 64 pages!) there are no clues really as to the events of that day. I'm sure someone else will come up with some more information for you....maybe from a war diary etc Ellie
micks Posted 7 December , 2009 Author Posted 7 December , 2009 Ellie Thanks for your response. I,ve gone through all the records which are on line relating to the 11th Battalion and the six men of C company who were killed that night. Although there is some information in the Service Record of Pte Shields it unfortunately does,nt help much until I locate the jumping off point for those who took part in the attack . Mick
