sotonmate Posted 6 December , 2009 Posted 6 December , 2009 Andrew Welcome to the Forum ! You begin with good fortune as your solider has a surviving service record on Ancestry UK. Only less than 30% survived bombing in 1940,and these papers show signs of the damage by fire and water, some of it is gone and some unreadable, but enough to give you more detail. His record is under Charles Pull, because whoever filmed and titled the record failed to note the Oscar forename. There are two sets of records, one of 6 pages and one of 11. The 11 has the same pages as the 6 plus more detail on family connections, four brothers, two of which seemed to have their own homes,William 28 at Margate, and John 24 at Sheerness. Two younger brothers Albert 15,and Arthur 13. A few details to whet your appetite,if you can't get Ancestry yourself you can join for a two week trial and get to read it,or you can log on at yoru Library for free (maybe) or local History Centre. Lived with parents William and Laura, at 72 Byron Rd Margate. Enlisted Margate 23 Jan 1915. Joined the Buffs 27 Jan 1915 at Canterbury. Trained and posted to 2 Battalion 27 April 1915. Killed in action at the Battle of Loos on 29 Sept 1915. Remembered on the Loos Memorial as he has no known grave. Enjoy your research. Sotonmate
susanhemmings Posted 6 December , 2009 Posted 6 December , 2009 Me again, Hello Andrew. Hopefully one of the East Kent specialists on this forum will help you. If you title a new message East Kent Regiment query and add all the details of your man (regiment no: G/5619) and his name etc someone may have further info on what action East Kents were involved in when he was killed. Welcome to you again. Susan
sotonmate Posted 6 December , 2009 Posted 6 December , 2009 Andrew Some reading for you from the LLT at top left of this page: http://www.1914-1918.net/28div.htm your relative's Battalion was in 85 Brigade of 28 Division and this is the page for them. http://www.1914-1918.net/bat13.htm covers the Battle of Loos in some detail. As you will see from the account a very costly battle for us. The Battalion War Diary is stored at the National Archives at Kew under ref WO95/2279 and accounts for their time from landing in France in 1915. Sotonmate
devonmaid Posted 6 December , 2009 Posted 6 December , 2009 Hi Andrew Welcome to the forum Oscar Charles Pull G/5619 enlisted into 2nd Battalion East Kent Regiment (The Buff ) on 27th January 1915 @ Canterbury, aged 17 years & 5 months old. His address at the time was 72 Byron Road, his next of kin was his father William ( mother Laura) and had 4 brothers & 5 sisters. His occupation was as a Hammerman (?). Noted as missing, then K-I-A on 29-9-1915. I can't help with what action he was involved with, but i'm sure an expert on The Buffs will be able to give you some information. He has a few....badly damaged pages of records on Ancestry. I could forward those on to you if you PM'd your email address. Ellie
