grantowi Posted 6 December , 2009 Posted 6 December , 2009 Hi Chaps, Looking for information on a Peter Mcnulty, born (I think) in Ireland in 1882, Joined the Royal Irish Fusliers in 1899 and went to South Africa in 1900, was discharged unfit in december 1901. He got married to an Ethel White in 1908 in Liverpool and then reappears in 1915 as a trimmer on the Lusitania's last trip. I have his record from Ancestry, which states he was born in Armagh, aged 18 & 10 months when he signed up in march 1899 (puts Dob at 1881 ish) Also have the CWGC entry stating he died in 1915 aged 33 (puts Dob at 1882 ish) and lists the same parents as the elistment papers and the wife as per the marriage certificate (where he is listed as a labourer) I cant see him on the 1911 census - there is a Peter Mcnulty from Armagh listed as being on HMT Rewa, as a gunner, but the DOB is wrong and he's single - So I suppose he might have been away sailing. Are there any online records of Merchant Seamen available ? Any help appreciated Grant
freddy1918 Posted 6 December , 2009 Posted 6 December , 2009 Hi Grant, I've done a few years work on the Lusitania crew, I'll have a look at my index tonight and let you know if I can add to that... is he a relative? Freddy
per ardua per mare per terram Posted 6 December , 2009 Posted 6 December , 2009 Are there any online records of Merchant Seamen available ? Unfortunately not, and for this period there are generally no service records offline either. The register for 1913-1918 appears to have been lost. If his medals were claimed the MICs are in BT 351 on microfiche at Kew.
grantowi Posted 6 December , 2009 Author Posted 6 December , 2009 Freddy, Cheers, yes he is a relly, a pretty distant one. Iv'e searched all of the Lusitania sites that I can find and they only tell me that he was Irish and a Trimmer :-( Per Ardua, Many thanks for the clarification, know where not to look now Grant
grantowi Posted 8 December , 2009 Author Posted 8 December , 2009 Quick question, Are birth / marriage certificates available from Ireland online ? If so, any one point me in the right direction Cheers Grant
freddy1918 Posted 13 December , 2009 Posted 13 December , 2009 Sorry about the delay! Peter McNulty, 32 - born, Bronesborough NI - son of Bernard and Sarah. Married to Ethel White. That was his first and last voyage on the Lusitania. His previous ship was the Missanabee. Got an address of 3 Parr St, Litherland for him. Not sure yet whether or not he had any children... Freddy
grantowi Posted 13 December , 2009 Author Posted 13 December , 2009 Cheers Freddy, That sort of luck runs in my family He had at least 1 daughter - Mary Winfred Mcnulty, born in 1913 - I suspect there may be more seeing as he got married in 1908. Any indication as to how long he had been on the ships? in 1908 on his weddinf certificate he has down "labourer" as an occupation On the Missanabee, was he a trimmer ?, any idea how long he was with her ? Many thanks Grant
freddy1918 Posted 14 December , 2009 Posted 14 December , 2009 Your best bet for tracking a Merchant seaman is to go through ship's logs. There is a column for "last ship" on the agreements. To find out where he was before the Missanabee if you don't have his book, you need to see if the log survives. A small % of logs are at the national archives but usually for "Famous Ships" If not there is a stash in Newfoundland where you might have some luck. Ordering up his daughter's birth certificate from the ONS will give you an occupation for him in 1913 - which could narrow down your understanding of when he went to sea...
freddy1918 Posted 14 December , 2009 Posted 14 December , 2009 And there's another daughter - Sarah, born at the end of 1914 Freddy
grantowi Posted 14 December , 2009 Author Posted 14 December , 2009 Freddy, Once again, many thanks. I dont have any documentation on him, looks like Im now on a log hunt :-( Thanks for Sarah Grant
freddy1918 Posted 15 December , 2009 Posted 15 December , 2009 I wouldn't have expected you'd find the Misanabee at the National Archives - it's usually the big liners but I'll PM you details of the Canadian stash Freddy
grantowi Posted 15 December , 2009 Author Posted 15 December , 2009 Freddy, Once again, thanks for the help Grant
Guest Posted 12 July , 2012 Posted 12 July , 2012 Hello Grant. I was very interested to read your posts regarding Peter McNulty. He is my great grandfather on my maternal side. His daughter Mary, was my nan and she used to tell the story regarding the sinking of the Lusitania. I would be very interested to hear of any information you have managed to uncover about him as I have already learnt things from your posts that I did not know before. Kind regards Suzanne
grantowi Posted 22 July , 2012 Author Posted 22 July , 2012 Many thanks to the GWF, this short thread, and Suzanne, my adopted Aunt has been put in contact with her real family, after a 60 odd year seperation, Grant
russellf97 Posted 3 December , 2013 Posted 3 December , 2013 (edited) While Googling for something entirely different, I came across this thread (and also another one here on GWF) which mentions Peter McNulty. Although no direct ancestor of mine, Peter married Ethel White in 1908 and they had two known children: Mary W McNulty in 1913, and Sarah E McNulty in 1914. There was also another child born to Ethel; Evan J(ohn) McNulty in 1916. Although he bears the surname McNulty, I suspect the father was Evan T Jenkins, who Ethel married in West Derby District in 1919. My relationship to the McNultys is that Evan J McNulty married my aunt Doris May Matthews; Doris being my mother’s sister. Ethel and Evan Jenkins had a child, Herbert, in 1926. That’s pretty much all I know about the McNulty branch of the family, but if anyone is interested, about half my tribe is on GenesReunited. Phil Curtis Edited 19 December , 2013 by Russell_F97
Guest Posted 5 February , 2014 Posted 5 February , 2014 Hi Phil Your post is really interesting. I will have a chat with my mother to see if she knows anything about her mothers half brother. I can remember visiting family as a child with the surname Jenkins, but this might just be a coincidence. Regards Suzanne
russellf97 Posted 16 October , 2014 Posted 16 October , 2014 Hello Suzanne, Apologies for the delay in answering your post. Did anything come of your asking your mother? I don't know if you have seen this http://1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=142687 but John McNulty was Peter McNulty's brother. Regards, Phil
