jdonovan Posted 4 December , 2009 Posted 4 December , 2009 Hello, My grandaunt (Mary Josephine Donovan) served as a VAD. Though she was born and brought up in Galway, she may have served in Edinburgh. She was married to Jeremiah O'Sullivan in 1915. He may have been serving with Royal Engineers. I have tried TNA to see if there is any information there but am having no joy. Does anybody know if there are any records of Irish VADs. MJ went on to become the first woman professor of history in Ireland in the first all women university history department in the world. She died in 1968, but I only met her when I was very young.
Sue Light Posted 4 December , 2009 Posted 4 December , 2009 I don't think her nationality makes any difference. All VADs in the UK were administered by the Joint War Committee of the British Red Cross and St. John of Jerusalem during the war. All surviving details of service for VADs are now held at the British Red Cross Society Archives - details here: BRCS personnel records Sue
