Sapper Will Posted 1 December , 2009 Share Posted 1 December , 2009 If you go to ancestry.com and look for his name in the military records, you may find his draft registration card, which will list his age, occupation, address and other information. If you don't subscribe to ancestry.com, you can give me his name and I'll be happy to hunt him up. The 58th was part of the 8th Infantry Brigade of the 4th U.S. Division, which was involved in the St. Mihiel and Meuse-Argonne campaigns. The 4th or "Ivy" Division was very roughly handled in the Argonne, suffering severe casualties. A good recent book on the battle is To Conquer Hell by Edward G. Lengel. Thank you for your reply Sapper Will . " I have posted on another thread more details about this tag.-" soldiers; searching for Private Walter E Lawrene" I'm going to subscribe to ancestry.com as suggested by others. I am awaiting delivery of a book called "The 58th Infantry in the World War 1917-1918-1919 by George L Morrow. I hope it will give me more of an insight on how the regiment was formed and its involvement in the second Marne offensive. I have found a map showing where the 4th division was in relation to my parents village. I will try to post it on this forum as well as a scanned picture of the tag if I can find out how to do it! What a great bunch of people on this forum! Hi chrisdave, Any chance of posting a photograph of the said dogtag you've found ?. Regards RGA I am not sure how to attach pictures to this post. I will keep trying. Thanks a lot
Sapper Will Posted 2 December , 2009 Share Posted 2 December , 2009 I looked for the fellow on ancestry and couldn't find him. There were numerous names that sounded like "Lawrene" so perhaps the tag or the draft card got his name wrong. This may be a dumb question but are you sure it isn't Lawrence? WW1RGAfinder Posted 2 December , 2009 Share Posted 2 December , 2009 I am not sure how to attach pictures to this post. I will keep trying. Thanks a lot ------------ chrisdave, When you reply to this msg you see the attachment facility, the main issue is to reduce the size of attachment to Max size = 100K, then UPLOAD. However if you fail you can always just use the Post Message facility and send the whole attachment. Cheers RGA

4thGordons Posted 7 December , 2009 Share Posted 7 December , 2009 I looked for the fellow on ancestry and couldn't find him. There were numerous names that sounded like "Lawrene" so perhaps the tag or the draft card got his name wrong. This may be a dumb question but are you sure it isn't Lawrence? If he was a pre war regular soldier (or even a National Guardsman) there will not be a draft registration card. Draft cards do not show service - they only indicate registration for the draft (conscription). I have the history of the 4th Division which contains quite a few rosters so I will have alook when I get home this evening. Actually.... here it is online! - a quick search does not find obvious candidates for your man. But lots of interesting details for you on his likely service. In the casualty lists for Company C 58th Inf. there are no likely looking names (its p331) I am at work but will have a search when I get home to see if I can turn up anything more. Guest Posted 19 January , 2013 Share Posted 19 January , 2013 I came upon this post as I was researching my grandmother's husband's military history.. He was a 2nd Lt, 58th inf. Co C. I will try to get a copy of pvt Lawrene's records. Could you give me an idea of where this tag was found? I can map it against the movements of the 58th infantry to understand when pvt Lawrene may have been there.. Wonderful forum. Cody
