josquin Posted 30 November , 2009 Posted 30 November , 2009 Help with a look-up from Ancestry.com will be appreciated greatly. I need the birth and death dates and places, the location of his enlistment, and parents' names for William Joseph BENGER, who was born in Wiltshire, in 1895, and died of wounds sustained 17 October 1917, in France. The information I need is in the "Matching Person from a Family Tree," the 1901 Census for England, and Soldiers Died in the Great War. Thank you for any assistance that is forthcoming. Regards Trelawney
sotonmate Posted 30 November , 2009 Posted 30 November , 2009 Trelawney I found no hint in SDGW,nor De Ruvigny, nor on CWGC. There is a Sgt William J BENGER on the Medal Index Cards serving as Sgt 12966 KRRC and later Sgt 88288 RFC. The MIC shows no MM nor a date of his death, which is often added. 5 Bengers on CWGC but none fit the initials or rank, though there is a Lance/Sgt. I know that sometimes fate is against finding it for one seeker and then another pops up with the details ! Let's hope that happens here. Sotonmate
josquin Posted 30 November , 2009 Author Posted 30 November , 2009 Sotonmate Thank you for the information and the very quick reply! Sjt. Benger is on CWGC: the last of 5 choices when I just accessed it. CWGC lists him as Sjt. William Joseph Benger, M.M., died 17 October 1917 at the age of 22; son of Joseph William Benger, whose address (postwar) was Ewell, Epsom, Surrey rather than Wiltshire (as it was for the 1901 Census). CWGC gives his service number as 88288 which agrees with the MIC details. It is odd that SDGW did not list him, but it would not be the first time I have noticed such disparities. He did have the M.M.; it was gazetted 20 October 1917-- three days after he died. Trelawney
sotonmate Posted 30 November , 2009 Posted 30 November , 2009 T Great ! I still don't get it on my screen ! I left the initials off and got three hits for the rest, left out the initials and get no hits ! I see this quite often, and with others here ! Perhaps I should pay the leccy bill ! Sotonmate

josquin Posted 3 December , 2009 Author Posted 3 December , 2009 Grant, Thank you for the 1901 Census information about Sjt. Benger and his family. This was very helpful for supplementing the limited details that are available from service records. Trelawney
