Remembered Today:

Dating a Lewis Gun...

HI,

Does anyone know if there are any BSA production figures? I am keen to know approx when a Lewis Gun (number 205XX) was made.

I am guessing 1915-16... but it is a wild guess based on nothing.

Thanks

Chris

Acceptances of Lewis guns at BSA were:

1914 8

1915 3,650

1916 21,615

1817 45,528

1918 62,303

Total 133,104

That puts your gun in the second half of 1916.

and how common to have a mismatched gun? i'm thinking 241** on the main body and 421** where the magazine fits and possibly 68** near the trigger, any ideas?

Pretty common I would suggest, especially if they have been passed around various nations in the last ninety years, stripped, put back together, etc., etc.

Based on the acceptance figures I gave above, the cumulative number of Lewis guns accepted by the end of each year were:

1914 cum. total 8

1915 cum. total 3658

1916 cum. total 25273

1917 cum. total 70801

1918 cum. total 133104

That puts your 24188 in late 1916 and 42188 around April / May 1917.

Do you think that two of the digits were juxtaposed on yours? It seems rather a coincidence if two guns with such similar numbers were being put back together at the same time.

Matt,

I concur with Tony E...my gun numbered 46718 I date to late May early June 1917. By 1917 they were producing 4,000 ground models every month!

Mixed numbers is common. My gun has matched numbers however a recent batch on the market (most with desert / sand coloured paint finish) have all had the number totally erased on the top plate / body cover! Then renumbered with a much lower number.

As an aside I pass the old BSA factory ( what is left) frequently and always think of the iconic gun produced there in the years 1914 - 1919!

Regards

TT

Very poor taste for the title of this thread....

Too many had a date with such a gun but didn't came back to tell us the story.

Franz I don't think there was any intention or link as you might think. Dating refers to calendar issues not the 'modern' dating translation. Good to see like minded people sensitive to sacrifice but there was no connection here. Please don't take this as comment on translation etc.
