tstewa Posted 30 November , 2009 Posted 30 November , 2009 Im trying to find information on my Great Grandfather. He apparently served with the RFC Kite Balloon. Unfortunatley I have minimal information on his service. His name was Alexander Stuart He was from Carluke, Scotland and was apparently way in France & Belgium for 3 1/2 years. He was born 26/06/1881 in Edinburgh. Hope someone might be able to help Cheers Toby
per ardua per mare per terram Posted 30 November , 2009 Posted 30 November , 2009 While he was in the RFC he was in the army and so those service records are a standard army search. But only a small fraction of their personnel are on the medal index cards. On 1st April 1918 the RFC merged with the RNAS to become the RAF. Their service records are offline in AIR 79 at Kew and have all survived, but you need to know his service number as they are stored in service number order. There is a very poor alphabetical index to the service numbers in AIR 78; this is also offline. There are several threads on Kite Balloons on the forum and various books that give some details. Such as Peter G. Cooksley, RFC/RNAS Handbook 1914-1918, (Sutton, 2000).
