Name: Walter James Hazelwood Birth Place: Holborn Residence: Islington Death Date: 19 Nov 1917 Enlistment Location: Finsbury Rank: Rifleman Regiment: London Regiment Battalion: 17th (County of London) Battalion (Poplar and Stepney Rifles). Number: 574689 Type of Casualty: Killed in action Theatre of War: France and Flanders Comments: Posted 2Nd Rifle Brigade. His MIC show's that he was entitled to the British War Medal and Victory Medal. Upon death his next of kin would have received the Memorial Plaque and Memorial Scroll. Some details from CWGC Debt of Honour, Name: HAZELWOOD Initials: W J Nationality: United Kingdom Rank: Rifleman Regiment/Service: London Regiment Unit Text: 17th Bn. Secondary Regiment: Rifle Brigade Secondary Unit Text: posted to 2nd Bn. Date of Death: 19/11/1917 Service No: 574689 Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead Grave/Memorial Reference: XXXVIII. B. 1. Cemetery: TYNE COT CEMETERY This battalion was part of the 25th Brigade, 8th Division. This Regular Army Division was in the Ypres area and took part in the Third Battale of Ypres. I'm sure the battalion war diary could be found at Kew to see exactly where the Battalion was situated at the time of his death. Hope this helps. Cheers Andy.

River97 Posted 2 December , 2009 Posted 2 December , 2009 Jim, As far as I'm aware you can find the reference number on the National Archives web site, however, you have to go to Kew to get a physical copy of the War Diary. Don't quote me on that though, as I haven't used their web site since I got access to Ancestry, even though they don't have the war diaries. Cheers Andy.
