HI ALL,

NEW TO THIS FORUM, DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY INFO ON THE FOLLOWING SOLDIER: Private HENRY HERBERT BAKER

116252, 47th Bn., Canadian Infantry (Western Ontario Regiment)

who died age 22

on 13 April 1917

Son of James Baker of Mount Pleasant, New Cut, Westfield; husband of Nellie Susan Baker, of White Gate Gardens, Westfield, Battle, Sussex, England.

Remembered with honour

THIS IS MY WIFE'S GREAT GRANDAD AND HIS NAME IS FIRST ON THE LOCAL WESTFIELD MEMORIAL.

WE WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHY HE WAS ATTACHED TO A CANADIAN REGIMENT AS HIS FAMILY IS FROM WESTFIELD ENGLAND; NO-ONE IN OUR FAMILY SEEMS TO KNOW; WE STILL LIVE IN WESTFIELD AND WOULD LOVE TO COMPLETE ABIT OF MY WIFE'S HISTORY...THANKS

Hello, Dave;

Welcome to the Forum.

Something to get you started... The link below is a link to the Library and Archives Canada web-page for your wife's great grandad. It would appear that he attested (applied to join) the Canadian Expeditionary Force in 1915 in Vancouver, British Columbia. My guess is that he had emigrated from England and was living (or perhaps visiting) in Vancouver. You can apply for a service record for CEF members through another link on the same site. Generally cost 40 cents Canadian per page, and LAC does require a credit card for payment..

Perhaps other members can supply other avenues for you to explore as well.

Dave,

Looks like your wife's great granddad wasn't so much 'attached' to the Canadians as he was in Vancouver when he enlisted directly in the CEF.

(I think that says Vancouver on the Attestation sheet?)

It seems likely that he died in the Battle of Vimy Ridge,a famous involvement of the Canadian Forces of WW1. The Vimy Ridge Memorial is still administered by the Canadian Government today, with teenage students from Canada doing tours of duty there, and well worth a visit. Here a story of the Battle, which refers top the 47th Battalion's involvement:

I too had a man from my village (Swanmore Hampshire) who fought with Princess Patricia's (Eastern Ontario) Regt of the Canadian Army,he too died in the area of Vimy Ridge but earlier than your man. He worked in a Bank in Toronto,as it looks like your man worked in Vancouver.

Edit: I have a note in my book that there is a photo on the Forum of my soldier, which I already had,but it might be of interest to you to see if there is one here for yours too. I don't remember the thread it would have been in but have a vague recollection that there were quite a few photos of British-born who served with the CEF. Maybe someone here remembers where !

Don't stop with the attestation paper, you can order his service record:

Name: BAKER, HENRY HERBERT

Regimental number(s): 116252

Reference: RG 150, Accession 1992-93/166, Box 371 - 34

Date of Birth: 13/02/1894

How to consult a file on-site or order a copy of the complete file

How to order a copy of a complete service file

The complete service files are not available on-line. Only the attestation papers have been digitized.

Due to the large volume of inquiries we receive, we are unable to provide a service for selecting and copying specific documents from within a file; we only provide copies of complete file. As well, the documents are not paginated and we cannot undertake page counts of files prior to ordering. However, most Canadian Expeditionary Force service files contain an average of 25 to 75 pages, with those for personnel who were drafted or enlisted later in the war typically having smaller files. They are open to the public without access restrictions.

How to order photocopies

See: <a href="http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/copies/005010-5021-e.html">Price List and Service Standards - Photocopy
