Caught the last half of CitA Today As an Geo V MC,Pair{MiD} A set of Naval Miniatures from WW2 & a 1939/45 BWM on a France & Germany Ribbon came up {the owners were getting rid because they didnt know anything about them~surprisingly enough, neither, in my opinion did the Expert!!!} his expert estimate was £30~£45 ~ "Because there is nothing special there..." mmmmmmm :angry2::excl: His valuation on a load of old Waverley Novels was far more {& they didnt get there either!!} The Medals made a paltry £285 in the Room~just about the price of a Confirmed MiD to an Officer I should think...

When are the Beeb going to employ someone who actually knows this subject {I am available....}

Well Harry, if you are a medal collector that's the time to jump in and buy cheaply, with guys like that around giving appraisals.

Why am I never at auctions like that?

I know that feeling~if ever I find a Medal or group in a local "General" auction; the World & his wife have been informed & are there in spades.....!

"Because there is nothing special there..." Well I suppose compared to a DSO... You do wonder why they have this 'expert'!

I've had this sort of experience twice on eBay (the last time the other day) - desirable postcards of early aviation in Wiltshire going cheap, but on both occasions my PC froze at the last moment. Both cards went for around £2 each, and I would have gone up to £25 for one and £16 for the other. :( Serves me right for being a "sniper".

Thats odd Ive also recently had my Pc freeze a few times when bidding late, I wonder if its an EBAY fault?. By the by anyone elses auctions get ruined last weekend when their search functions failed?. Cost me an arm and a leg.

The programme was actually on iPlayer last night, but the medals were so obviously not special that they warranted only a couple of seconds and my impatient searching didn't spot them.

Well, what can I say?

What kind of recommendation does one need to become a TV 'expert'.

If WWII was this particular 'expert's' 'thing', why did he not pick up on the fact that although a War Medal 1939 - 1945 does have a red, white, and blue ribbon, the example was saw was actually ribboned with a France & Germany Star?

I think it was a bit of a shambles.

Cheers,

Nigel

No, to be fair to eBay my PC has become very constipated. Today I've defragged the disk and done one or two other things, and it seems a bit better. Otherwise it may be time to wipe the hard drive and reinstall programs.

Remember the good old days when Cash in the Attic and Flog It used to send military items and medals to Bosleys? (Good news for seller, very bad news for buyer). You would have thought that as these programmes are not done in real time, they could stop... get on the mobile phone... Or just go to Dickinson's Real Ste... Deal.

Even the Antiques Roadshow with the Blue Peter badge wearing nit who hardly ever gives a proper explanation of what the items actually are... gets all emotional and says "oh, it's beyond price".

And I'd love to know if Auntie Beeb have a commercial arrangement with the Chiswick Auction Rooms...

Generalist experts can't expect to know details on all they find in these shows, but to say a) nothing special here and B) that pathetic estimate, he has done the sellers a disservice. Get a new one! (Who was it?)

It doesn't matter what the estimate is, the value of a good is only what people are prepared to pay for it. Even specialist medal auctioneers have been known to put low estimates on items to draw people into the sales room.

Indeed so - but that estimate indicated a complete lack of expertise by the so-called expert who even said he had a special interest in WW2 - and couldn't recognise a Military Cross?

I know full well something is only worth what it goes for and auctioneers place 'come and buy me' estimates. The sellers were dis-served by the so-called expert, that's the sole point of the argument. Some dealer - most likely - got a bargain. End of.

There are plenty or auctioneers who sell medals in general sales, and whether a dealer or a private buyer won them is neither here nor there. If the seller had any real interest in them, and maximising their eventual value, they could have easily put them in specialist auction. They chose to go to sell via the programme, the format of which is well known.

his expert estimate was £30~£45

Seems overpriced to me, I was at a car boot sale the other week and saw two VCs for £25 each!

This Expert must have found numerous MCs at the Bottom of a corn Flake boxs 30-45 pounds nothing special  i suppose by that pricing a VC would only be 2500 pounds

The parting shot from the "expert" on the fact the medals had hammered, literally, his estimates by 8x & 6x was that "Presumably someone wanted one of the medals to "make up a set",as you do!! :P
